Lady Wildcats go 4-1 in 5-match opening week

The Fleming Lady Wildcats opened their 2023 season with a busy, five-match week spanning two days of play.

The season opened last Thursday, Aug. 24, with a match at Peetz. The Lady Wildcats swept the Lady Bulldogs taking their first three set victories of the year.

On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Sterling to play on the Northeastern Junior College campus at the Bank of Colorado Event Center. The High School Spectacular Tournament featured two pools consisting of Merino, Holyoke, Otis, Dayspring Christian, Haxtun, Caliche, Arickaree and Fleming.

The Lady Wildcats opened the day with a match against Caliche and took their second sweep of the season. They faced off with Arickaree in the third match of the tournament, dropping one set, but winning the match 3-1.

In the third match of pool play, the Lady Wildcats went up against the Haxtun Lady Bulldogs. Haxtun took the first set by five points, but Fleming battled back to take set two, 25-16. Haxtun took over from there and won sets three and four, 25-20 and 25-23, respectively, for the 3-1 match victory.

Fleming's pool play efforts allowed them to move into the championship round of bracket play where they faced off with the Lady Bulldogs of Otis. The Lady Wildcats lost set one of that match, 25-14, but fought back to take set two, 25-19. Otis earned the third set, 25-14, before the Lady Wildcats shut them down. Fleming took the final two sets, 25-23 and 15-12, to win the match.

Individual stats for the opening five matches of the season were not reported as of press time. The Lady Wildcats stand at 4-1 after the first week of play.

This week, the Lady Wildcats were set to the Wiggins Lady Tigers in a home opener on Thursday. Results of that match had not been determined as of press time.

On Friday, Sept. 1, Fleming is set to travel to Idalia who went 2-1 in week one action. Matches that day are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 5 brings a contest against the Akron Lady Rams in Akron. The Lady Rams stood at 0-3 after the opening week of play. A 4 p.m. start time is listed for that day.

The Lady Wildcats will round out the week's play on Thursday, Sept. 7 at home against Weldon Valley in league play. Weldon Valley held an 0-2 record as of this week's press deadline. Game time on that day is set for 5:30 p.m.
