Lady Wildcats take 2 losses, 1 win; stand at 5-3 heading into week 3

Fleming's Lady Wildcats tacked on a pair of losses and sweep over the past week in volleyball action. The Lady Wildcats hosted the Wiggins Lady Tigers in a home opener last Thursday, Aug. 31, then traveled to Idalia and closed at Akron on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Thursday, Aug. 31's home opener against Wiggins ended after three close sets. The first set went into extra points with Wiggins taking the win, 26-24. Fleming came within three points in set two, 25-22, and fell in the final set 25-19 for the match loss.

Senior MadiKay Serrato led the Lady Wildcats at the net against the Lady Tigers with seven kills. Sophomore Quincy Stull followed with six.

Sophomore Ciana Lousberg led from behind the serving line with four aces in the contest. She served 91.7 percent with one error on 12 serves. Junior Kylie Bretz-Hoskins went 100 percent after putting over nine serves. She added a single ace.


Sophomore Ashley Bornhoft led the team in blocks with three; two assisted and one solo.

Sophomore Brooke Schaefer put up top numbers in digs from the back row with 12. She also led in serve-receives with 24. Lousberg also added double digits in digs with 10 and Serrato followed Schaefer in serve-receives with 22.

On Friday, Sept. 1, the ladies traveled to Idalia where they suffered their second loss of the week at the hands of the Lady Wolves. Idalia took the first set by 10, 25-15, and the second set by four, 25-21.

Set three went to the Lady Wildcats by a score of 25-23, but Idalia earned the match win with a 25-17 fourth set.

Bornhoft and Lousberg both hit double digits in the kill category. Bornhoft led with 12; Lousberg added another 10.


The Lady Wildcats serve game looked solid with several team members putting over an ace. Schaefer, junior Kylie Bretz-Hoskins, Bornhoft, sophomore Siena Donnelson, Serrato and freshman Hayley Chamberlain each tallied one in the ace column. Bornhoft and Donnelson went 100 percent from behind the serving line and Chamberlain made good on 18 of 20 serves in the contest.

The Bornhoft/Lousberg duo also led at the net in blocks. Bornhoft put up seven total blocks; two of those solo. Lousberg added two solo and one assisted for three total blocks and Stull added three assisted blocks for the night.

Four Lady Wildcats earned double digits from the back row in digs. Serrato led the group with 15; Schaefer put up 13 and Lousberg and Chamberlain added 10 apiece.


Lousberg and Chamberlain split setting duties from the front. Lousberg ­- last season's starting setter - put up 18 assists while Chamberlain added another 14.

Serrato and Schaefer put up top numbers on serve-receive. Both ladies put up 19 passes in the match. Donnelson and Lousberg also hit double digits in the serve-receive column with 12 and 10, respectively.

The Lady Wildcats traveled to Akron on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Lady Rams swept the match that night. Scores by set and individual stats for the contest were not available by press time.

The Lady Wildcats now stand at 5-3 overall with a 1-0 league record following a season-opening win over Peetz.

This week's schedule puts Fleming on their home court on Thursday, Sept. 7 against the Weldon Valley Lady Warriors in league action. Play is set to start at 5:30 p.m. that day. They'll close out the week with two road matches - a league contest at Prairie on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and a non-league match at Lone Star on Thursday, Sept. 14.
