Sept. 21, 1938

About 4,060 wheat growers in Colorado have applied for wheat insurance policies under the government's crop insurance program, with 403 in Phillips County, 303 in Sedgwick County and 275 in Yuma County.

Midway News - Sowing wheat and putting up hay is the order of the day in this community for the farmers.

Premium list for Corn Festival: Best 10 ears yellow dent corn, first, $10; second $7.50; third, five dollars; fourth, $2.50. Best 10 ears white corn, first, $7; second, $3. Best ear hidden corn, first, $3; second, $1. Prizes of 50 cents and 25 cents for first and second respectively will be given on garden products.

Sept. 23, 1953

Six new members of the county fair board were elected Monday night: Harold Colglazier and Vern Kramer, District 1; Pryor Lewis and Mr. Sandstead, District 2; Jay Hoadley and Harold Pond, District 3. People were allowed to vote for only the candidates in their own districts.

Drilling began Monday for oil on state-owned land northwest of Haxtun by the Deep Rock Oil Company. The land is nine miles north and four and one-quarter miles west of Haxtun and is near the farm of Everett Barden.

One of the greatest athletes of all time, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, will speak and Haxtun on Sept. 29 at 11:30 a.m. at the high school, on the subject of temperance. One of the records Cunningham set is the indoor mile with a time of 4:04 in 1938.

Phillips County winners at the state fair: Donna Mae Fryrear, Joyce Fryrear, Billy Fryrear, Darris Cumming and Elton Olofson.

Sept. 21, 1978

Haxtun's new million-dollar gymnasium was officially dedicated at ceremonies held Sunday at the new gym, featuring an address by Dr. Calvin Franzier, commissioner of education. Nearly 200 were present. Ray E. Crosby, trustee for the W.E. Heginbotham Memorial, presented school board president Kenneth Fetzer, the third of five checks for $40,000, which the foundation is contributing.

Fleming homecoming queen Donelle Kirkwood, pictured, travels in the Fleming Fall Festival parade with Sharon Dreier and Tina Dodd, attendants. Dale Lousberg was selected as King. His attendants were Mark Sweet and Tom Burton. Alphreta, McDevitt and Doug Vandenbark were crown bearers for royalty at the Friday night game.

Haxtun eighth grader Joleen Hofmeister appears to take her performance on the clarinet seriously during Friday's homecoming parade. Hod Boltjes is the Bulldog who plans to huff and puff and blow the Buffalo away during the Booster Club skit. Charging the crowd with spirit were cheerleaders Kristi Colerick, Kelly Ensminger, Melissa Gregory, Sharla Irish and Angie Mosher. Volleyball co-captains: Jamie Brundige and Paige Fuesz. Football co-captains: Michael McClain and Alan Eckman.

The Mountain View Presbyterian Church of Loveland was the setting for the wedding of Jillian Lee Griffiths and Joel David Brotherton on June 26, 1993. Officiating at the afternoon ceremony was the Rev. Mrs. Kathleen Fox, friend of the bride.

Shawna Richelle Soetaert and Monti Layne Knode were united in marriage on July 31, 1993, at the Cathedral of Our Lady Perpetual Help in Rapid City, S.D. Bishop Charles Chaput officiated the afternoon wedding.

Harold and Dorothy McConnell have spent more of their lives together over their 64-year marriage then they did a part before their courtship ... and all but a small part of that time together they've spent in their hometown, Haxtun. On Saturday, Sept. 28, Harold and Dorothy will start the 92nd Corn Festival Parade and will be honored by the Haxtun community as grand marshals.

An early morning accident along Highway 6 claimed the life of local Haxtun resident Diane Lambert on Tuesday, Sept. 10. According to a report, filed by the Colorado State Patrol, Lambert, 48, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Highway 6 several miles east of Fleming when she drifted over the centerline into westbound traffic. The Impala collided with a 1987 Freightliner semi driven by Gordon Browner, 47, Sterling.
