During the week leading up to Homecoming, cheerleaders Lara Brekel, Tricia Wisdom and Brenda Larson organized activities, designating Tuesday as Hawaiian day, Wednesday as pajama day, Thursday as dress alike day and Friday as school colors day. On Friday night the Wildcats came close to a win, but failed when Idalia made a final touchdown breaking the 28-28 tie. Royalty, pictured above, was crowned at halftime.

Oct. 5, 1938

Miss Maxine Thatcher of Holyoke and Clifford Smith of Haxtun were married in Holyoke last Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 28. The ceremony was performed by County Judge A.T. Searle. Friends of the couple gave them a charivari Sunday evening.

Death brought an end to the long illness and patient suffering of Mrs. T.E. Breezely last Sunday morning at her home near Dailey. Her age was 46 years, two months, and 20 days.

H.B. Radford received a letter last week stating that he had been awarded five dollars for submitting the best 10 words slogan from Phillips County in a contest sponsored by the Federation for workable old age pension. His slogan: "Take care of the needy, but out with the greedy."

Yellow dent corn, raised by Rex Meakins on his farm north of Haxtun was awarded first prize in the Corn Festival. Other first place winners: 10 ears white dent corn, Chase Meakins; 10 ears any other type corn, Rex Meakins; 10 ears hybrid corn, Chase Meakins; single-ear yellow dent, G.J. Moon; hidden ear, Emil Koch; 10 ears popcorn, C.P. Kennedy. Other crop categories: barley, oats, cane, sudan, sooner milo, kafir, sorghum, rye, fall and spring wheat, hog millet and hay millet.

Oct. 7, 1953

Fleming News - Finnis Brown has purchased Ahnstedt's Propane Service and wishes to announce that bottled gas will be available at all times at the Brown Oil Company.

One Haxtun establishment changed hands this week as Mrs. C.E. Corn purchased the Self-Service Home Laundry from Jimmy Brooks. The laundromat will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday.

St. Peters News - Cpl. Duane Lousberg was dismissed from the hospital in Germany last week. He was suffering from pneumonia.

Wayne Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Scott of Haxtun, is a member of the 1953 Colorado University freshman football team. The 185-pound center will see plenty of action for Ray Menkins' junior Buffaloes this fall. He is majoring in engineering.

Mr. and Mrs. Clark Starkebaum attended the football game in Fort Collins Saturday.

Haxtun cable subscribers are now receiving for Denver television channels from Satellite Cable Television.

Future Business Leaders of America officers were installed recently at Haxtun High School. Brett Garretson, reporter; Darry Stansbury, treasurer; Rhonda Potter, secretary; Art Lick, vice president; Lori Orth, president.

Miss Sue Uhrig and Joe Sweet were united in marriage on Sept. 9, 1978 at the First English Lutheran Church in Sterling. The Rev. Arnold Obermeier performed the double-ring ceremony at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

First birthdays: Lindsey Michelle Firme, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Firme, Oct. 1; Rebecca Lee Isaacson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Isaacson, Fort Collins, Sept. 23.

Oct. 7, 1993

Trevor Allen, 13, was taken by ambulance to Haxtun Community Hospital and then to Sterling Regional MedCenter after the car he was driving went off the side of the road and rolled. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Obituary: Nathan Andrew Shane Hovel, 19, Sept. 12, son of Dennis and Jenean Renzelman Hovel, from an automobile accident near DeBeque. Grandparents are Rhoda and Alfred Renzelman and Dorothy Sator of Haxtun.

Sarah Jubenville of Thornton came home with her grandparents, Jim and Betty McBee, on Thursday. She rode her bike in the Corn Festival parade.

First birthdays: Trenton Aaron Ham, son of Brian and Sandy Ham, Sept. 15; Kaylee Groshans, daughter of Mark and Joanie Groshans, Sept. 15.

72nd annual Corn Festival: wheat king, Claude Goddard; irrigated corn king, Mark Gueck; dryland corn king, Dick McDaniel; sunflower king, Roy Pfaltzgraff.

The annual Crop and Garden Show was held during Corn Festival last week. Entries were judged on Friday and were left for exhibit all day Saturday. Denise Hill earned top honors for irrigated corn. Glen Hill was honored for his dryland corn.

Raymond Schropfer and Berdine Koberstein were crowned Corn Festival King and Queen of the Haxtun Hospital District's Extended Care Unit last week. Runners-up were Inez Dee and Frank Unrein.
