Haxtun sweeps Akron on the road; hosts Caliche for homecoming

October 5, 2023

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs improved to 11-6 last week with a sweep over the Lady Rams in Akron. The win on the road was the only action the team saw on the volleyball court last week, but the schedule heats up as the regular season begins to wind down and post-season play is just on the horizon.

Haxtun took the court against Akron and in three quick sets, the Lady Bulldogs came out victorious with a sweep; 25-13, 25-21 and 25-14. According to MaxPreps, the win puts the team at 5-1 in league play and second in 2A/1A Lower Platte League standings. The sports website lists Merino as number one and Wiggins as number three. The Colorado High School Activities Association’s live placings puts the Lady Bulldogs at #11 in 1A action. In those rankings, Merino also holds the top spot with a 12-0 record.

Haxtun had four Lady Bulldog hitters take top honors in the kills category against Akron. Bobbi Starkebaum put down eight kills, the team high, followed by Jayleigh Bullard, Cassidy Goddard and Maggie Kilgour, each with seven kills. Megan Walker registered five kills as did Julia Freeman.

Goddard, Walker and Starkebaum each tallied one block on Friday night.

In the service department, Lilly Lemesany, Emily Anderson and Krista Dishman all served 100 percent. Freeman and Walker each put down five service aces followed by Lemesany and Goddard, each with two.

In the back row, Kelsie Hadeen tallied nine digs followed by Emily Anderson with eight. Freeman and Goddard lead in serve receive, each with 12 passes.

Walker led in assists with 20 followed by Hadeen with 11.

This week Haxtun is set to host Caliche in varsity action only for the annual homecoming contest for the Lady Bulldogs. The two teams met on the court at Northeastern Junior College in August; that outing went to the Lady Bulldogs in three.

The regular season rounds out with contests against Kimball, Neb., Otis, Sedgwick County, Weldon Valley and Merino.
