Fleming JH runners finish season; Betley to compete in post season

October 19, 2023

This year at Fleming, there is a cross-country team.

“The team is small, but mighty,” said Jared Betley, one of the high school runners.

Small is an understatement; Jared Betley is the only cross-country runner in high school. In junior high, there are five runners. The runners are Mason Nicolet, Corbin Detmer, Taten Sonnenberg, Draven Oldenburg and Brooks Brekel.

The group has competed at five cross-country meets. Sonnenberg and Oldenburg were usually leading the pack with almost first finishes. Brekel, Detmer and Nicolet all placed respectively in their races.

Betley has been in the middle of all of his competitions for the most part until the meet at Platte Valley, where he placed fourth with a time of 19:11.

The junior high season is already over. Those runners are lucky, Betley said; they may have started the season in the heat, but the junior high runners don’t have to end it in the cold.

The high school runner, Betley, has at least one meet left. On Oct. 19, he will compete at the regional meet. Depending on how he does at Regionals, he may go onto State. You can read more about how Betley does at Regionals and State later.
