Nov. 9, 1938

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel E. Chryst, pictured, who observed their 57th wedding anniversary here on Thursday, Nov. 3, have been residents of Haxtun for 20 years. Mrs. Chryst will be 78 on her next birthday. Her father lost his life in the Civil War in 1863. Mr. Chryst is 79 years old.

Election returns from the counties of Phillips, Sedgwick and Logan have practically assured the election of Fred M. Swisher, Democrat, as state senator from the 12th District. Other results: D.F. Sagehorn, Republican, county commissioner; Mrs. Emma S. Kramer, county clerk; H.B. Radford, coroner; C.A. Guernsey, surveyor; Ray E. Crosby, treasurer; B.A. Stevenson, assessor; Mrs. Gladys Hofmeister, superintendent of schools; H.M. Clements, sheriff; Roy E. Owens, state representative from Phillips and Sedgwick.

Nov. 11, 1953

A prominent pioneer cattlemen and farmer, Charles William Arens, was called to his eternal rest on Nov. 5, 1953. He came west with his parents, William Kasper and Agnes Arens, as a baby in 1887 from Illinois.

Mr. and Mrs. Vern Price received a telephone call from their son Joe Thursday evening from Oakland, Calif. He is in the Navy, and received orders that day to sail for a tour of duty in Japan. His boat left Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Berkey, who observed their 59th wedding anniversary Sunday, were the guests of honor at a dinner held at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hulse. Guests present to enjoy the day were Mr. and Mrs. Ira, Berkey of Sterling, Mr. and Mrs., Harry Downs, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne, Chaney and family, and Mr. and Mrs. James Berkey and family.

Miss Kathleen Schaefer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Schaefer of Fleming, and Thomas Bornhoft, also of Fleming, wed Saturday morning at Saint Peter's Catholic Church. The Rev. James Holloran performed the double ring rites.

Nov. 9, 1978

Elton Oltjenbruns was elected as commissioner and Pauline Watson as county assessor in the only two Phillips County races in this election. Others elected: Melba Hastings, state representative; Maynard Yost, Colorado Senate; William Armstrong, U.S. Senator; Dick Lamm, state governor; James Johnson, U.S. representative for Fourth District; Roy Romer, state treasurer; Steve Duncan, attorney general; Mary Louise Evans, county clerk; Lois Lipker, county treasurer; Claire Pillard, sheriff; Louis B. Harmon, county surveyor; Myrlen Chestnut, county corner.

Seniors on the Haxtun High honor roll: Art Lick, Judy Ruch, Bryan Anderson, Bill Garretson, Penny Gibbs, Lori, Hinde, Kim Hunt, Mike Wall and Denise Whittaker.

Fleming's mayor, Ralph Deines, approved a proclamation declaring the week of Nov. 5-11 as Disabled American Veterans Week. Pete Hedges of the Sterling DAV chapter, watched Deines sign the document.

Nov. 10, 1993

Phillips County Clerk Mary Louise Evans says she is pleased with the county's first mail-in election with 72 percent of ballots returned. Elected to Haxtun's RE –2J board: Reon Chaney, Barbara Wernsman and Rodney Ham. Results were still unofficial at press time.

Justin McDaniel has earned the gold American FFA Degree key, the highest award given on the national level to members of Future Farmers of America. He will receive his award at the 66th National FFA Convention in Kansas City this week.

Lifeline units are now available through Sterling Regional MedCenter to area elderly. The local Lions Club took the program over earlier this year, according to member Erv Byrkit.

Birth: Mark and Susan Gueck, Marquel Lynn, Nov. 2, 1993.

Fleming Wildcats in "We are proud of you" full-page ad: Jerry Hershfeldt, Chris Mari, Frank Lousberg, Jeremy Vandenbark, Chad Brekel, Lon Comstock, Tim Brekel, Jeremy Miller, Philip Griffin, Dale Comstock, team managers Adam Schmidt and Randy Kirkwood; head coach, Ken Albertson, assistant coach, John King. The team's 45-20 victory over the Kit Carson Wildcats on Saturday advances them to the six-man state football semifinals.

Yes to 3A! Haxtun School District voters passed bond issue 3A by a margin of 540 to 171 during elections on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Approving the measure gives the school district $3.39 million in general obligation bonds to match a $3.25 million grant from the State's BEST grant program. Combined, the funds allow for the construction of a 8,050 square-foot middle school addition and other school renovations including a 400 square-foot kitchen expansion.

Unofficial election results - Frenchman School District RE-3 (vote for two): Randy Kirkwood, 234; Michelle Asfeld, 177; Scott Muller, 155; Dana C. Chintala, 74.

The Haxtun community raised over $500 for Children's Hospital Colorado throughout the month of October during the Miracle Marathon. Close to 20 community members and students gathered for the final lap of the marathon on Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Haxtun Park.
