December 21, 2023

The Bulldogs took third place in Northeastern Junior College’s annual Holiday Tournament last week. Haxtun wrapped up the first half of the season and will be on Christmas break until the team returns to the court the first week in January.

Tournament play opened on Thursday as the Haxtun Bulldogs faced off with the Eagles from Dayspring Christian Academy. Haxtun put 36 points on the board in the first two quarters for a 15 point advantage at half time. Another 27 points in the second gave the Bulldogs a 63-37 victory over DCA.

Three Bulldogs hit double-digits in the scoring column in the opening contest. Sophomore Chase Goddard led his team with 15 points. Sophomore Colin Cone registered 13 and sophomore Kanin Koberstein put up 12. Senior Keegan Colglazier and freshman Madden Larsen each put up six points followed by senior Mason Bornhoft and junior Ryland Wolff, each with two. Junior Tate Michael and sophomore Jaxsen Schram both had a single two-point basket while sophomore Corbin Andresen connected with a single free throw

A first round win put Haxtun on the court with Holyoke in night two. Despite a fast-paced contest, the Bulldogs fell 56-25. Goddard led the Bulldogs for the second consecutive time. He scored six against the Dragons. Bornhoft and Schram each put up four points followed by Larsen, Wolff, Jack Feik, Koberstein and Braden Plumb, each with two. Carter Lock sunk one free throw.

Despite a tough loss to the Dragons, Haxtun rebounded for a third place finish with a six point win over the Akron Rams. The Bulldogs battled from a deficit to take the lead late in the contest and hold on for a 50-56 win.

Koberstein put 10 points on the board, the team high. Cone added eight points followed by Michael, Colglazier and Schram, each with seven. Wolff registered six points, Goddard added five and Larsen and Bornhoft each added three.

Basketball action resumes Jan. 5 as the Bulldogs travel to take on Prairie. There will be no junior varsity girls’ game. Junior varsity boys will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by girls’ and boys’ varsity. On Jan. 6, Haxtun will host Wiggins. Games start at 11 a.m. with girls’ and boys’ c-team, girls’ and boy’s junior varsity and girls’ and boys’ varsity.
