SCF boys' and girls' teams compete at Wray

HAXTUN JUNIOR Grant Statz wraps up Wiggins' Lukas Opatick during a recent dual at Fleming.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, the Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestlers traveled to Wray to participate in the 61st annual Bob Smith Invitational. The team finished in fourth place out of 15 teams. Results from wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

120-pound Kaiden Schelling went 3-1 and placed second for the day. He won by fall over Jose Gonzalez of Wray in 1:21; won by fall over Shiloh Dellamia-Van Overmeiren of Chatfield in 2:37; and won by major decision over Caleb Deines of Merino, 9-0. In the first place match, Schelling lost to Colin George of Chatfield by decision, 4-3.

126-pound Coleman Firme went 0-2. He lost to Sid Dillon of Chatfield and lost to Blake Stivers of Yuma won by major decision, 9-1.

132-pound Scotty Engle placed sixth. He pulled out of the tournament after his second match due to injury. Engle won by decision over Shane Todd of St. Francis, 6-2, and lost to Coen Schmidt of Merino by major decision, 13-3.

150-pound Zach Statz was 0-2 on the day. He lost to Logan Clark of Dayspring Christian Academy by fall and lost to Mason Porteus of Akron by fall.

157-pound Trent Wernsman went 0-2 for the day. He lost to Brody Richards of Wray by fall and lost to Jakzon Livesay of Akron by fall.

165-pound Grant Statz went 2-2 for a fifth place finish. He won by fall over Carlos Nunez of Limon in 0:55, but lost the semifinal match to Noah O`Dougherty of Chatfield by fall. In the consolation semifinal, Statz lost to Joseph Noce of Dayspring Christian Academy by fall. He then won the fifth place match by fall over Coleson Waitman of Wray in 0:56.

175-pound Kale Volkman was 1-2. He lost to Kaiden Powell of Byers by fall to open the day. He then won by fall over Adam Coronel of Byers in 2:49. He lost his final match of the day by sudden victory to Tyson Hanson of Yuma won in sudden victory, 8-6.

The SCF girls' team also traveled to Wray on Saturday where they participated in the first annual Marilyn Smith Invitational. The girls' team finished in third place out of five teams. Results from lady wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

120-pound Annie Wilson went 2-0 and took first place in her division. She won by fall over Emma Haynes of SCF in 3:04 and won by fall over Peyton Hynson of Yuma in 1:14.

125-pound Autumn Volkman went 0-2 and finished the day in third place. She lost to SCF by fall and lost to Kenya Arvizo of Yuma by fall.

135-pound Faith Woodside went 1-2 for a third place finish. She lost to Zoe Myers of Oakley HS by fall and lost to Makena Crownover of Wiggins by fall. Woodside won her final match of the day over Gabby Varela of Yuma by fall in 0:54.

155-pound Olivia Stone went 1-2 on the day for a third place finish. She lost to Lauren Gdanitz of Wray by fall before winning by decision over Jessica Apodaca of Yuma, 5-3. Stone lost her final match of the day to Lillian Miller of SCF by fall in 1:33.

This was the teams' final competition before Christmas break. They are set to return to action on Jan. 6 at the Carden County Invitational.
