Wrestlers return to mats at Garden County following Christmas break

The Sedgwick County/Fleming boys wrestlers hit the mat following their Christmas break. The team won the Garden County Invitational on Jan. 6 with 208.5 points out of 20 teams. They finished the tournament with six individual champions, three third places and two fourth places. Individual results from wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

106-pound freshman Colton Schliesser lost to Ashton Kay of Gering JV by fall and lost to Davian Palomo of Gering JV by fall.

120-pound senior Kaiden Schelling took first place in his division. He won by fall over Fayt Anderson of Crawford in 1:06; won by fall over Nicholas Arroyo of Morrill in 3:56; and won by decision over Cable Larsen of Garden County High School, 9-2.

126-pound sophomore Gradyn Helgoth placed third. He opened with a loss to Jase Roberson of Garden County High School by fall. In the third round of the consolation bracket, he won by fall over Andrew Mackety of Wauneta-Palisade in 1:00. He took the semifinal round by fall over Micah Woodbeck of Hemingford in 0:27. In the third place match, Helgoth won by fall over Gabriel Becerra of Sedgwick County/Fleming in 0:11.

126-pound sophomore Coleman Firme won by fall over Andrew Mackety of Wauneta-Palisade in 0:53. He lost to Jase Roberson of Garden County High School by fall in the semifinal match. In the consolation semifinal, Firme lost to Gabriel Becerra of Sedgwick County/Fleming by decision, 3-1.

132-pound junior Scotty Engle took first place. He won by fall over Zackary Jeffords of Bridgeport in 1:24 and defeated Jayden Roberts of Gering JV by fall in 0:34. Engle took the semifinal match by fall over Nathan Randolph of Hemingford in 1:41. In the championship match, he won by medical forfeit over Nate Barker of Bayard.

150-pound sophomore Zach Statz won his opening round by decision over Dalton Norman of Crawford, 5-2. He then defeated Jacob Hatcher of Perkins County by fall in 0:38. Statz lost to Harrison Barnette of Bridgeport by fall and Tyler Lashley of Morrill by fall.

157-pound junior Grant Statz placed first. He won by fall over Laurence Keller of Morrill in 0:48; won by fall over Brody Garrett of Holyoke in 0:37 and took the championship match over Kyser Lewis of Morrill by fall in 0:58.

157-pound senior Trent Wernsman opened with a loss to Kyser Lewis of Morrill by fall. He then won by fall over Laurence Keller of Morrill in 1:56 and won by fall over Nolan Lambertson of Scottsbluff JV in 4:53. Wernsman fell to Josh Miller of Hemingford in the consolation semifinal match.

165-pound freshman Bryden Woodside lost to Drew Varner of Hemingford by fall and lost to Aden Blanco of Gering JV by decision, 11-5.

175-pound junior Kale Volkman opened with a win by fall over Cole Leithead of Bridgeport in 1:26. He lost to Kolby Houchin of Bayard by fall and then defeated Dylan Bruce of Perkins County by fall in 4:25. Volkman lost in the consolation semifinal to Preston Schwanebeck of Perkins County by fall.

190-pound junior Ryan Davis placed third. He won by decision over Bradyn Miller of South Platte, 6-5. He then lost to Blake Emig of Dundy County-Stratton by fall. Davis took the consolation semifinal by decision over Dakota Wesley of Hay Springs. 4-2, and won the third place match by fall over Kenyon Florom of Paxton in 3:34.

The Lady Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestlers traveled to Oshkosh, Neb., to participate in the Garden County Invitational. The team finished seventh out of 17 teams. Individual results for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

120-pound sophomore Annie Wilson placed third. She won by fall over Lily Castillo of Bridgeport in 3:19. Wilson then lost to Jamelah Taylor of Papillion-La Vista by fall in the semifinal match. In the consolation semifinal Wilson won by fall over Faith Lee of Leyton in 2:09. In her final match of the day for third place, she won by fall over Jazzmyne Hardin of Morrill in 2:01.

125-pound sophomore Autumn Volkman lost to Valeria Robles of Papillion-La Vista by fall and Lexie Amendt of Sedgwick County/Fleming by fall.

145-pound sophomore Faith Woodside lost to Hayden Boles of Hay Springs by fall. She then defeated Madisen Meek of Hemingford by fall in 0:11. In the consolation semifinal, Woodside lost to Rei Wood of Maxwell by fall.

155-pound sophomore Oliva Stone lost to Addeline Graser of Papillion-La Vista by fall and Bailee French of Morrill by fall.

The SCF boys' and girls' teams will be on the road to Elm Creek on Jan. 12 and Chase County on Jan. 13.
