Sedg. Co./Fleming wrestlers compete in several events last week

The Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestling team had a busy week. They started the week off dualing Wray on Tuesday, Jan. 23 in Ovid for parents' night. SCF then hosted Yuma for a dual in Haxtun on Thursday, Jan. 25. On Friday, Jan. 26 the team traveled to Curtis, Neb., to compete in the Medicine Valley Invitational where the team finished third then they finished their busy week at Stratton where some of the guys competed in the Stratton Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Wray defeated SC/F, 50-24. Results from wrestlers competing in the dual out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

120-pound Kaiden Schelling defeated Austin Snapp, 4-2.

126-pound Coleman Firme lost to Jose Gonzalez by fall.

132-pound Scotty Engle lost to Austin Collins by tech fall, 15-0.

157-pound Grant Statz defeated Coleson Waitman by fall in 1:20.

190-pound Kale Volkan lost to Tavery Chappell by fall.

215-pound Ryan Davis defeated Walker Goodwin by fall in :55.

SC/F defeated Yuma, 69-4. Results from wrestlers competing in the dual out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:


Schelling competed at 126 pounds. He defeated Blake Stivers by fall in 1:05.

At 132 pounds, Engle defeated Ethan Nadow by fall in 1:40.

Zach Statz won in the 150-pound class by forfeit.

Grant Statz won in the 165-pound class by forfeit.

In the 175-pound division, Kale Volkman lost to Daden Beauprez, 14-3.

Davis defeated Deacon Brown, 3-1, at 215 pounds.

Results from wrestlers competing in the Medicine Valley Invitational out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:


106-pound Colton Schliesser lost to Scotty Anderson (Sutherland) by fall and lost to Dylan Wendell (Bertrand) by fall.

Schelling took first place on the day at 120 pounds. He won by fall over Jackson Cyboron (Chase County) in 0:41 and won the semifinal match by fall over Gage Hammond (Southwest) in 1:36. In the championship match, Schelling won by fall over Cable Larsen (Garden County) in 2:49.

126-pound Gradyn Helgoth lost to Sawyer Gillming (Pleasanton) by fall and lost to Coleman Firme (SC/F) by decision, 7-0.

Firme competed at 128 pounds. He lost to Mitchel Stritt (Southwest) by fall. Firme then defeated Gradyn Helgoth (SC/F) by decision, 7-0. He lost his final match of the day to Connor Einspahr (Chase County) by decision, 7-2.


132 lb. Scotty Engle placed first and earned his 100th high school career win. He won by fall over Tristan Woolf (Sutherland) in 2:46; defeated Zane Kleeb (Pleasanton) by fall in 1:09; and won the semifinal match by fall over Jaqueb Hoover (Chase County) in 1:54. In the championship match, Engle defeated Jaxon Smith (Elm Creek) by decision, 11-9.

Gage Helgoth placed third at 132 pounds. Helgoth lost his opening match to Jaqueb Hoover (Chase County) by decision, 11-6. He then defeated Zane Kleeb (Pleasanton) by fall in 0:35. In the consolation semifinal, Helgoth won by fall over Rigen Riessland (Pleasanton) in 0:58. In the third place match, he defeated Jaqueb Hoover (Chase County) by decision, 8-2.

At 150-pounds, Zach Statz lost to Kason Bruns (Sutherland) by fall. He defeated Kody Carpenter (Hyannis) by fall in 2:15. He lost consolation round three to Reece Perry (North Platte) by fall.


In the 157-pound division, Grant Statz placed first. He won by fall over Jess Fanning (Dundy County Stratton) in 0:42 and defeated Trevor Kohl (Hyannis) by fall in 2:37. In the first place match, he won by fall over Westyn Mendenhall (Chase County) in 0:52.

Kale Volkman competed at 175 pounds. He lost to Thomas Reeves (Chase County) by fall. He defeated Haydn Thomsen (Brady) by fall in 0:44. He won consolation round three by fall over Aidan Goad (Elm Creek) in 3:00. In the consolation semifinal, Volkman lost to Trey McCrumb (Wauneta-Palisade) by fall.

Results from wrestlers competing in the Stratton Invitational out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:


Schliesser lost to Derreck Buford (Crowley County) by fall; defeated James Woods (Simla) by fall in 1:46; and lost to Micah Everhart (Dayspring Christian Academy) by fall.

At 126-pounds, Firme won by fall over Alizar Acosta (Brush) in 4:14; he lost to Landen Beauvais (Dayspring Christian Academy) by fall; defeated Eliah Confer (Dayspring Christian Academy) by fall in 2:38; and lost to Jaden DePue (Wray) by fall.

Gage Helgoth placed third at 132 pounds. He lost to Kai Polk (Dayspring Christian Academy) by fall to open the day. He then defeated Scott Pollock (Las Animas) by fall in 1:15 and defeated Conor Klecker (Simla) by fall in 1:54. He lost consolation round four to Braxton Withington (Colby) by major decision, 14-1. For third place, Helgoth won by forfeit over Gradyn Helgoth (SC/F).


Gradyn Helgoth placed fourth at 132 pounds. He won by fall over Conor Klecker (Simla) in 1:01; lost to Kai Polk (Dayspring Christian Academy) by fall; and lost to Braxton Withington (Colby) by fall. Helgoth won by fall over Scott Pollock (Las Animas) in 3:06 and took fourth place after forfeiting to Gage Helgoth (SC/F).

At 150 pounds, Zach Statz won by fall over Lucas Hillman (Stratton) in 1:21. He lost to Keegan Halloran (Crowley County) by fall. In consolation round two, Statz won by major decision over Alyxx Egley (County Line), 9-0. He then lost to Jackson Polk (Dayspring Christian Academy) by fall.

Kale Volkman earned fourth place at 175 pounds. He won by fall over Marcelo Chaparro (Holyoke) in 3:12; lost to Adam Shults (Simla) by fall; and won by decision over Bryce Kinnie (SC/F), 1-0. In the third place match, Volkman lost to Haxden Mills (Stratton) by decision, 6-4.

190-pound Ryan Davis placed second. He won by fall over John Rusher (Crowley County) in 5:12; won by fall over Kiva Clark (SC/F) in 1:39; won by fall over Wyatt Cross (Dayspring Christian Academy) in 1:39. In round four, Davis lost to Tanner Tomky (Swink) by fall. He won by major decision over Ethan Park (Merino), 11-3, in his final match.

The SCF boys wrestlers will travel to Greeley to dual Dayspring Christian on Friday, Feb. 2 and then they will travel to Yuma on Feb. 3 to compete in the Yuma duals.

The SC/F girls dualed Yuma on Thursday, Jan. 25 in Haxtun. Yuma won the dual 36-33.

Results of those matches for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

120-pound Annie Wilson defeated Kenya Arvizo by fall in 3:01.

At 130 pounds, Autumn Volkman defeated Gabby Varela (Yuma) by decision, 9-6.

140-pound Faith Woodside won by forfeit.

At 170-pounds, Olivia Stone lost to Gese Sanchez by fall.

On Jan. 27 the girls traveled to Littleton to compete in the Chatfield War Horse Girls' Invitational. Some of the girls competed in a gold bracket for their weight and some in a silver bracket. The gold bracket consisted of the top 16 girls in each weight and the silver bracket was the remaining girls in each weight. The girls finished in 32nd place out of the 53 teams and had three individual placers.

Results from ladies competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

Wilson competed in the 120 lb. gold bracket. She did not finish the tournament due to an injury. She lost round one to Samantha Maestas (Alamosa) by fall and lost in round two to Kenya Arvizo (Yuma) by medical forfeit.

Autumn Volkman competed at 125 pounds in the silver bracket. She won by major decision over Quincy Ellis (Durango), 20-6; lost to Anna Bratton (Poudre) by fall; and lost to Ashlynn Warner (Mesa Ridge) by fall.

Faith Woodside competed at 140 pounds in the silver bracket. She lost to Jordyn Blackmore (Coronado) by fall. She then defeated Taylor Zotter (Berthoud) by fall in 0:26. In her final match, Woodside lost to Mia Strohfus (Mead) by fall.

Olivia Stone took third place in the 155 pound silver bracket. She won by fall over Natalie Gomez (Brush) in 3:04 and lost to Piper Neunreiter-Clark (Chatfield) by fall. In the consolation semifinal, Stone won by decision over Addyson Wolver (Mead), 7-4. She took the third place match by decision over Margarita Tikhanova (Jefferson), 5-0.
