SC/F wrestlers compete in Regional Tournaments; several make State

On Feb. 9 and 10 the Sedgwick County/Fleming boys traveled to Akron to compete in the CHSAA 2A Region 1 Tournament. The team finished the tournament in second place with a team score of 205.5 points behind Wray with 213.5 points. Eight SC/F wrestlers qualified to compete at State. Not only did they qualify eight, but every one of the 14 wrestlers placed at Regionals.

Individual results for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

120-pound senior Kaiden Schelling is headed to his final state tournament with a record of 33-5 and a second placed finish at Regionals. Schelling won his quarterfinal match by tech fall over Jaden DePue of Wray, 17-1. This win put him in the semifinal against Akron's Merek Charney. Schelling won this match in sudden victory, 4-2. He lost his first place match against Traven Sharon of Fowler by a 5-0 decision.

126-pound junior Gage Helgoth ended his season with a record of 26-18 and placed fifth at Regionals. He won his quarterfinal by decision over Landen Beauvais of Dayspring Christian Academy, 10-3. He then lost his semifinal match to Cooper Barnes of Burlington by fall. He lost his consolation semifinal match to Canyon Andrist of Lyons in 1:43. This loss put him in the fifth place match against Landen Beauvais of Dayspring Christian Academy. Helgoth won this match 4-3.


Junior Scotty Engle finished second at Regionals and will be heading to the State Tournament with a 38-6 record at 132 pounds. He won his opening round by fall over Grady Pickering of Lyons in 2:16. In the quarterfinal, Engle won by fall over Austin Boone of Fowler in 2:56. The semifinal match put Engle up against Scout Humrich of Burlington. Engle pinned Humrich in 2:55. This win put him in the championship match against Tyler Varra of Highland. He lost this hard fought match 7-6.


Junior Grant Statz is headed to State at 157 pounds with a record of 26-4. Statz placed second at Regionals. He won his quarterfinal match by fall over Coleson Waitman of Wray in 1:57. He then won his semifinal match by decision over Weston Johnson of Fowler, 5-4. This win advanced Statz to the championship match where he was defeated by Angel Vela of Burlington by fall.

190-pound junior Ryan Davis placed fourth and is headed to State with a 21-17 record. In the Regional quarterfinal, Davis won by fall over Dreison Davis of Limon in 4:34. His semifinal match put him on the mat with Ira Sittner of Highland. Davis lost this match by fall. In his consolation semifinal match, he won by fall over Lenny Ramirez of Burlington in 2:46. This win put Davis in the third place match against Eric Tracy of Wray. Davis lost this hard fought match 7-6.


215-pound junior Kale Volkman placed sixth and finished his season with a 18-27 record. In the quarterfinals Michael Pacheco of Wiggins won by fall over Volkman. In the consolation semifinal match, Volkman lost by fall to Donovan Juarez of Highland, which put Volkman in for fifth place. He lost this match to Deacon Brown of Yuma by decision, 6-0.

The SC/F ladies traveled to Fort Lupton on Feb. 9 to compete in the 2023 CHSAA Girls' North Metro Region 1 Tournament. The girls finished the tournament in 11th place out of 25 teams, with three placers out of eight competing and one state qualifier.


120-pound sophomore Annie Wilson finished her debut season with a record of 22-8. She won her opening round by fall over Mya Prasad of Abraham Lincoln in :46. She then won her quarterfinal match by fall over Rhys Bernier of Denver North in 2:24. Wilson lost her semifinal match to Breezy Johnston of Broomfield by fall. She also lost her consolation semifinal match to Taylor Madsen of Brighton by fall. This loss put Wilson in for fifth place. She defeated Lia Martinez of Pomona by fall in 2:30.

130-pound sophomore Autumn Volkman ended her season with a 6-17 record. Volkman lost in round one to Lauren Gdanitz of Wray by fall. She also lost her opening consolation match to Areliana Bravo of Fort Lupton by fall.


155-pound sophomore Olivia Stone finished her season with a 8-16 record. She lost in round one to Ashley Booth of Mead by fall. She also lost in the opening round of consolations to Guadalupe Alvarez Rios of Fort Lupton by fall.

The State tournament is slated for Feb. 15-17 at Ball Arena in Denver.
