A successful career in high school track and field has afforded Cassidy Goddard, Haxtun High School senior, the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level. Goddard signed a letter of intent to join the Black Hills State University track and field team while in front of family, coaches, teammates and supporters last week. Black Hills State University boasts a 123 acre campus in Spearfish, S.D.

"Cassidy got my interest as an all-around athlete. I don't necessarily recruit based off size, which is common for throws. However, I'm interested in someone who can apply their athleticism to a variety of disciplines and Cassidy excels there," said Matt Cahoon, Black Hills State University Track and Field Throwing Coach.

While a freshman, Goddard was a part of the Championship four-by-100 relay team, was on the sprint medley team that earned second at State, placed third at State with the four-by-200 meter relay team and took fifth at State in Discus. She was named Colorado High School Activities Association All-State in her first high school season.

As a sophomore, she placed third in discus and eighth in shot put at the State competition.

Last year, Goddard took second at discus and ninth in shot put at State. She also broke Haxtun High School's discus record at the Saint Vrain Invitational with a throw of 130 feet, eight inches.

"I'm confident Cassidy will bring great energy, character and high level performance to our program," Cahoon said. "I believe Cassidy is going to be a very special discus and hammer thrower for us!"

Cassidy plans to study business with a minor in communications while competing with the Yellow Jackets.

"I'm in the business of developing elite throwers, but it's a requirement that my throwers are high quality human beings first. Cassidy embodies the humble kindness that it takes to become a great thrower, as well as build up her teammates and training partners!" Cahoon said.
