Lady Wildcats enter District play in #2 spot behind Lady Falcons

Despite taking two losses to close the regular season, the Fleming Lady Wildcats have earned the number two spot heading into District play this week. The team took on Sedgwick County on the road on Thursday and hosted Idalia for the regular season closer on Friday.

The girls led after the first quarter on Thursday against the Lady Cougars, but by halftime Sedg. Co. had gained a five-point upper hand.

The home team continued to control the pace in the second half and went on to take a 55-34 victory over the Lady Wildcats.

Sophomore Brooke Schaefer led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 14 points. She earned six of those off three-point shots. Senior MadiKay Serrato followed with seven points. She also hit two three-pointers.

Sophomore Ashley Bornhoft led under the net in boards with 11. She grabbed three offensive and eight defensive rebounds. Freshman Hayley Chamberlain followed with six rebounds.

Serrato led in assists with five. Schaefer led in steals with six.

The following night, the ladies hosted the Idalia Lady Wolves. They trailed by six after the first quarter, but led by one at the halftime horn.

The two teams battled in the third quarter. Idalia added 17 while Fleming added 16 to make it a tie ball game at 31-all. Idalia took the lead in the final quarter and shut Fleming's offense down to three points to take a 44-34 victory.

Sophomore Ciana Lousberg led on the scoreboard with 10 points. Schaefer followed with eight points and led in assists with three.

Bornhoft led in rebounds with eight. Senior Tori Champ, Lousberg, Serrato and sophomore Quincy Stull each brought down four boards.

With a 10-8 record, the Lady Wildcats have earned the number two spot in the 1A District 4 Tournament slated for this week. Briggsdale took number one at 17-2.

The second seed gives the Lady Wildcats a bye in the opening round of Districts. They are set to take the court against third-ranked Prairie on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.

The two teams met in the regular season with Fleming taking a narrow, two-point victory over the Lady Mustangs. The winner of Thursday's contest advances to the Championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
