Feb. 22, 1939

Miss Margie Nell of Haxtun and Max Fulsher of Holyoke announced to their friends this week that they were married on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Kimball, Neb. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nell. She was reared at Haxtun and received her education in the schools here. Mr. Fulsher is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Fulsher of Holyoke. He is a graduate of Stanford University in California.

Ralph Gale was elected chief of the Haxtun Volunteer Fire Department last week. He will succeed William Albershardt, who resigned before leaving for Washington state last week.

Feb. 24, 1954

News of servicemen: Jack Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Price Sr., is now stationed on the USS Hancock at Bremerton, Wash. Pvt. Darrell R. Gruben, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gruben, is now serving with the Army's headquarters in Alaska. Bill Ashton, former high school teacher and assistant coach at Haxtun, has completed basic training in the Army and was transferred to Washington D.C. Sgt. David Lousberg of the Saint Peter's community landed in the United States Sunday aboard the transport Marine Serpent, docked in Seattle, Wash. He has been in the Far East for the past year.

Haxtun junior high Bullpup basketball team: Terry Ruch, Gordon Urton, Darren Holsten, Ty Thompson, Kenny Ham, Mark Gueck, Carl Jackson, Matt Martin, Ed Wernsman, Rusty Olson, Correy Lick and Robbie Easton.

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. Stormy Baker, Shannon and Chase, went to Greeley Sunday afternoon to visit with Mr. and Mrs. John Wells and girls. The twins stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Randy Schafer.

Couples of the Assembly of God Church enjoyed a sweetheart supper Valentine's Day evening. Present were: Rev. and Mrs. Gary McElhaney, Mr. and Mrs., Leslie Langdon, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne words, Mr. and Mrs., Francis Pemberton, Mr. and Mrs., Oscar Fetzer, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wertz.

Haxtun Herald Publisher Jean Gray recently took over as president of the Colorado Press Association with the passing of the gavel from outgoing President Danny Dressman on Feb. 12. She is the fourth woman in the CPA's 116-year history to serve in the position.


The last link between Haxtun and E-911 slipped into place last week. That piece was a mechanism to set off Haxtun's fire alarm, according to George Michael, town superintendent.

Ryan Ley, a junior at Haxtun High School, has been selected artist of the month for January.

Winners of the Platte Valley Soil Conservation District poster contest: Shalan Bemus and Alyssa Erlenbach.

Plans are currently underway to outfit the Fleming Junior/Senior High School Band with new uniforms. The financial goal is just under $14,000 to purchase 50 to 60 uniforms.

Close to a dozen people showed support for Superintendent Jim Copeland at last week's Fleming Board of Education meeting. One by one, community members, fellow, coworkers, parents and students stood to speak in favor of Copeland and their disappointment in a split vote to extend his contract the month before.

Eugene and Marjorie Brown recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. The couple was married Feb. 14, 1946, shortly after Gene returned from the service. Their children are Randy Brown, and wife Debby, Haxtun, and Peggy Brown-Baxter and husband, Eddie, Desert Hot Springs, Calif.
