Legislative reporter discontinues weekly service

March 28, 2024

For many years, legislative reporter Marianne Goodland has offered reporting services to Herald readers and for that publishers have been thankful. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Goodland has been forced to suspend her legislative reporting services.

When Goodland began reporting on the Colorado State Legislature for rural communities in northeastern Colorado, several other local, weekly newspapers were on board, helping to cover costs. However, all of those other publications have since dropped out or are no longer able to use the service and that has forced Goodland to suspend her services for financial reasons.

“It doesn’t make financial sense for me to continue to do the work for just one newspaper,” Goodland said in her announcement to the Herald on March 21. “I've really enjoyed writing for the northeastern papers; it's given me an invaluable grounding in rural issues that I will carry with me into the future.”

Publishers Candie Fix and Spring Atchison have appreciated the working relationship with Goodland to bring State issues to the pages of the Herald. Moving forward, there will not be in-depth coverage of the Colorado State Legislature in the Herald, but should opportunities arise in the future, Fix and Atchison would be open to forming connections to bring important information to rural Colorado.
