April 12, 1939

April old-age benefit payments will average about 99 cents more than the March payments. The average payment will be $40.03. However, a $12 deficiency will be deducted because of lack of state funds, making the average payment $28.03. Pensioners who originally are scheduled to receive checks of $12 or less will not receive a check this month.

Relatives and friends went to the home of Mrs. Emily Eckman last Sunday to help celebrate her 83rd birthday anniversary. Those present: Mr. and Mrs. John Sandquist, Mr. and Mrs. Gunnar Wahlstrom and Miss Viola of Holyoke, Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Sandquist, and Mr. and Mrs. Holquist of Julesburg, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Franson and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Eckman, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Eckman, Mrs. Ida Berg and Walter Paulson. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Eckman wear callers in the afternoon.

Miss June Hagemeier and Willard Becker were the principals in an Easter wedding Sunday evening at the home of the bride's parents southwest of Haxtun. In the presence of 43 guests, the ceremony was performed at seven o'clock by Rev. James R. Jones, pastor of the Fleming Methodist Church.


70 Years Ago

April 14, 1954

Hospital news: Marvin Holstein, who recently returned home following a tour of duty in the Armed Forces, excepted the position as hospital technician and began his duties April 1. He replaces Curtys Isaacson, who resigned to take care of his farming interests.

Alvy Garretson topped the hog market in Denver last Wednesday with eight head of Chester Whites. The hogs weighed 258 and brought $28.40. The hogs were bought by Swift and Company.


Fleming News - Ed Miles is another victim of the mumps.

New Haven News - There will be an Easter sunrise service at the New Haven Church at 5:30 o'clock in the Ross McDaniel pasture, if weather permits.

Dance: Music by Bob Murphy, Saturday, April 17, American Legion Hall. Because of Easter, the dance will begin at 8:30 and close at midnight.

Cast members in the Haxtun senior class play of "Desperate Ambrose" are Kibby Brazelton, Norm Tanner, Art Lick, Bill Garretson, Bryan Anderson, Mark Ault, Kathie Anderson, Jackie Wernsman, Lori Hinde (filling in for Susan Henry, who was ill), Denise Whittaker, Judy Ruch, Sherry Casella, Penny Gibbs. The play was directed by Gerald Jarman with Scott Meakins in charge of sound and lights.


Fleming seniors present "Meet Me in St. Louis" with cast members Kevin Herrick, Amy Wisdom, Kendra Morrison, Lisa Bornhoft, Darlene and Arlene Wiebers, Rose Burenheide, Paula Dodd, Mike Brownell, Perry Wardrip, JoDee Grauberger, Sandy Dreier, Doris Einspahr, LuAnn Loos, Keith Beck, Fred Gregory, Donelle Kirkwood, Gary Nelson and Dale Lousberg. Mrs. Laura Williams directed the play. Scenery was painted by Paula Dodd.

30 Years Ago

April 13, 1994

Caroline Newth is now Assistant Administrator of Patient Care at Haxtun Hospital after 14 years as director of nursing.


A class ring that Loren Hovel lost 56 years ago was recently unearthed. The ring, lost in 1938, was found at Denny Ulmer's home south of Haxtun. At one time it was Hovel's brother's place.

First birthday: Timothy Eugene Nichols, son of Jeff and Sandy Nichols, Fleming, April 9, 1994.

Haxtun seniors Casey Sumpter and Jackie Dix were named by Haxtun American Legion Auxiliary members for this year's Colorado Columbine Girls' State.

The Fleming Wildcat baseball team is off to a 3-3 start according to stats on MaxPreps website. The defending State Champions are under the direction of a new coaching staff this season as Sherman Kage takes over for Bob Vandenbark.
