Vocational agriculture students from Haxtun High School received an average ranking at the state judging contest held last week. Robert Reynolds won significant honors for himself and his school. He was awarded the State Farmer Degree. Dan Ramsay entered in judging poultry and eggs. Lester Seger and Rex Mooney took part in grain judging and crop identification, as well as potato judging. The livestock judging team was composed of Dean Schachterle, Laurie Ramsay and Clarence Rhodes. Everett McConnell represented the school in insect identification.

Fairfield News - Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Skold and their daughter Mildred, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Franson and sons were Sunday afternoon callers at the George Michael home.

Gordon Thomas, aviation machinist's mate, third class, USN, who has been on a tour of duty in the Far East, was among the men who returned to the U.S. April 22 aboard the attack carrier, USS Oriskany. The Oriskany operated with the fast carrier Task Force 77, part of the United Nations peace patrol in Korean waters.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carnes entertained at a dinner Sunday in honor of their granddaughter Joan King, whose birthday was April 28. Others present: Mr. and Mrs. Hillard Yost and Ricky, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Kipp and children.

Haxtun American Legion officers installed Tuesday, April 17: Don Lock, commander; Howard Gibbs, senior vice commander; Bob Wright, junior vice commander; Dennis Ulmer, adjutant; Kenneth Fetzer, sergeant of arms; Bill Kain, chaplain; Bill Wilson, finance officer; Howard Prouty, service officer; George Michael, historian. Building board members are Alvin Yost, Don Lock, Roland Barkey, Dennis Ulmer and Eldon Salyards.

A Haxtun teenager was killed Sunday night in a freak, one-car accident five miles northwest of Haxtun. Killed was 13-year-old Michelle Suzanne Anich, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Anich of Haxtun. Also injured in the crash was Jody Haynes, 14.

Six candidates seek no-pay job on hospital board at Haxtun: Claude Goddard, Jack Falk, Connie Haynes, Barbara Willard, Jim Matthews and John Everett.

Ryan Ley appointed state parliamentarian at state FBLA conference held April 17-19 at Vail. Ley, the son of Dr. James and Jan Ley, attained his position after scoring highest out of 50 FBLA members from around the state. According to Marilyn Garretson, FBLA sponsor, this is the first time a Haxtun student has earned this honor.

Doug Larson, Hortau High Plains Regional Sales Manager, decided to bring the company's simplified irrigation system back to Haxtun and the High Plains area after leaving his family's drip irrigation business several years ago. The High Plains Office, located at 107 S. Colorado Ave. in Haxtun, is one of four Hortau locations across the United States and Canada.

Death notice: Ruth, Jay Baker passed away on April 19, 2014 at the age of 94.
