Under the Wire

Can I buy stock?

March 11, 2020

A few years ago the big news out of our capitol city was the opening of a new and totally unique furniture store. Must have been a slow news day. Actually, the media blitz lasted several days, touting a shopping experience like none ever seen. This caught my eye because, short of getting bucked off a horse into a patch of prickly pear cactus, there is nothing I dislike more than shopping, especially in a furniture store. All those couches and I can’t take a nap on any of them. No TV nearby and don’t ever think about a snack filled refrigerator within walking distance. That’s just wrong. You’ve got to be careful around bathroom displays, too. The four initial store name sounded sort of Chinese, adding to my dislike of the ‘made in’ label.

There is another five letter store we do a lot of business with, however. Whenever we decide the purchase of a television, stove, car or anything else it is necessary we have the same conversation. Sue “Guess we are going to have to buy a stove.” To which I answer, “Yep.” Then the store name comes up. “Where are we going to buy it?” I ask.

“I dunno,” Sue replies, “where do you want to go?”

“I dunno,” is my standard reply. At least we have decided on a location.

“When can we go?” Sue continues. “I dunno,” is my muttered response, “what are you doing tomorrow?” I continue.

“I dunno,” is her stock answer. The store’s name just keep coming up.

Sue, “What brand shall we buy:”

me, “I DUNNO. What do you think?”

“I DUNNO,” Sue informs me.

This “Who’s on first” routine goes on, sometimes for days.

I tried asking my brother-in-law where they bought their stove. “I dunno,” is his answer, “your sister bought it. I didn’t go.”

They live in Idaho so there must be I dunno stores all over the country. They are huge, too. Our son was going to buy a new pickup. Asked him where. You guessed the answer.

The odd thing is, I have never even heard these stores advertise. No T.V., radio, newspaper, nothing. How in the world can a business become successful like that? Are they publicly traded? Can I buy stock in this, on the tip of everyone’s tongue, company? The answer is simple. I dunno.
