Nov. 6, 1935

Miss Vlema Luelf and Mr. Roy Schachterle, well-known Haxtun young people, were married on Monday of this week at Loveland. The wedding was performed by the Rev. G.B. Cunningham, former pastor of the Assembly of God Church at Fleming. The contracting parties were accompanied by Mrs. W.A. Luelf, Mrs. J.B. Schachterle, Frances Bundy, Donald Luelf and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Schachterle of Denver. After a honeymoon trip to Denver and the mountains, Mr. and Mrs. Schachterle will make their home on a farm south of Dailey.

Notice was received in Haxtun early this week that approximately $1,300 had been allowed by the Works progress administration for improvements at the grade school here. The project calls for landscaping and other improvements.

For sale: Sandwich all-steel snapped corn sheller, 100 to 150 bushels snapped corn per hour. Very good condition, $250. Currie Hardware Co., Yuma.

High school happenings: The operetta cast has been selected and six juniors find themselves among the honored ones. Those chosen are Vrela Meakins, Clinton Jeffers, Verne Cronquist, Lowell Heiny, Frank Radford, John Rhodes and Marguerite Suhl. Those juniors who are going around talking to themselves are only members of the English II group learning passages from Shakespeare's "Tragedy of Macbeth."

Nov. 8, 1950

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carnes was the scene of a pretty fall wedding on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5, at 2:30 p.m. when their daughter Esther became the bride of Hillard Yost. Reverend Louis A. Haruf, Holyoke, officiated at the single-ring ceremony.

Dan Thornton, Gunnison County rancher and Republican, defeated Walter W. Johnson of Pueblo as governor of Colorado. Gordon Allott will be lieutenant governor.

Dr. Doris M. Benes has opened an office at Haxtun and is practicing medicine. Her office is in the hospital building and that portion known as the older Farmers' State Bank corner. She served a one-year internship at the General Hospital at Wilkes Barre, Pa., until June of this year.

A wildcat oil drilling operation is underway southwest of Haxtun on what is known as Bar-K ranch land. The well is the first major oil prospecting operation in the Haxtun country and the outcome is anxiously watched by landowners of this section.

Fleming: Lawrence Chapin recently enlisted in the Air Force and entered the service Thursday. He was accompanied to Denver by his mother, Mrs. Ed Chapin, who spent the weekend with relatives there.

Nov. 6, 1975

Births: Mr. and Mrs. Gary Rahe are the parents of a boy, Joshua Aaron, born Oct. 29, 1975. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis are the parents of a baby boy born Oct. 21, 1975. He was named Michael John Davis.

Paoli: Mr. and Mrs. Ray Surgart of Silver City, N. M., were visitors in the home of her father, Gus Holstein, the past week. On Wednesday, they called at the Nora Fisbeck home and also at the home of Mrs. Mabel Grieser.

The Haxtun United Methodist Church was the setting Saturday, Oct. 11 for the candlelight service uniting Sheri Byrkit and Brett Hofmeister in marriage. The double-ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Gordon Benesh.

Nov. 8, 1990

When the final tallies came into the Phillips County Courthouse on Wednesday morning, Republican Linda Statz once again carried her lead towards the treasurer's office. Opposing her during the race was Vona Maine, Marjorie Brewer and Arnold Constance. Jay Martin won District I Commissioner seat and Richard Potter took the Sheriff's race.

Lady Bulldogs going to State volleyball are Staci Starkebaum, Suzi Harris, Becky Braun, Melissa Lock, Anita Fetzer, Keisha Howard, Jodi Canchola, Dana Salvador, Crisa McClain, Jennifer Waite, Jennifer Kain, Connie Howard, Beth Wernsman and Amanda Seger. They are scheduled to play Eads.

The Bulldogs will meet the Swink Lions this Saturday at home for football after a 47-0 win over Kiowa in quarter-final action. Touchdowns were made by Cory Fuesz, Mark Meakins and Chris Fuesz. Justin McDaniel added a two-point PAT.

Fleming's Lady Wildcats earned their spot in the State Volleyball Tournament set for Nov. 12 and 13 at the Denver Coliseum after defeating Denver Waldorf, Merino and Community Christian at Regionals last Friday. The Lady Wildcats enter the State Tournament as the number one seed in the 1A Class with an overall record of 27-1 on the season. Friday's wins gave Fleming their fifth consecutive Regional volleyball title.

The health care profession is nothing new for Haxtun Hospital District's recently hired Chief Executive Officer Don Burris. Burris stepped into the CEO role at HHD on Nov. 1 and brings years of health care experience with him.
