Haxtun falls to Akron; set to face Yuma and Sedg. Co. this week

March 31, 2021

For the second time so far this season, the Haxtun Lady Bulldogs met up with the Lady Rams from Akron on the volleyball court. The season kicked off just over a week ago and last-minute schedule changes due to COVID sent the Lady Bulldogs to the home of the Rams on Friday afternoon. Originally Haxtun was set to travel to Caliche for a triangle event with the Lady Buffs and Lady Rams, but a positive COVID test from the Caliche camp held them from competing.

The first time the two teams met up, Haxtun took down Akron at home in a five-set match up but this time, at the home of the Rams, things went differently. Akron took set one, 25-17 and set two, 25-19. The Lady Bulldogs scrambled for a 25-23 win in the third to keep the contest alive, but Akron earned the win with a fourth set, 25-21, win.

The loss puts the Lady Bulldogs at 1-2 overall this season.

“It was not our night,” Head Coach Paige Thompson said of the outing in Akron. “Our girls did not have the same intensity that we did the previous week. As a team, we gave away too many points to come away with a win. These girls love a challenge and will work hard this week to improve. We will be making some adjustments and will come out strong on Thursday against Yuma and Sedgwick County.”

Three Lady Bulldogs earned double digits in the kills category, led by Taylor Schram and Allie Thompson, each with 11. Megan Walker put down 10 kills followed by Cassidy Goddard with seven. Thompson also tallied one solo block at the net.

Bella Tori and Thompson each served 100 percent on Friday. Walker led her team in aces, with four, followed by K’lyn Bornhoft and Schram, each with three service aces.

Defensively, Ella Coffin tallied 11 digs in the back row while teammates Bornhoft and Schram each dug up 10. In the back row, Coffin had 39 successful passes on serve receive followed by Bornhoft with 17 and Thompson and Goddard, each with 10.

Setters Schram and Thompson combined for a total of 38 assists on the night.

This week Haxtun is set to host Yuma and Sedgwick County for a home triangle event on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will see the Yuma Indians for the first time this season and face off against Sedgwick County for the second time in two weeks. According to Maxpreps, the Lady Indians are current 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. Sedgwick County has a 4-0 record including a five set win over the Lady Bulldogs in week one action.
