Lady Cats grab 3-set win in home opener

The Fleming Lady Wildcats brought their game to their own home court last week for this year’s home opener. The squad hosted the Weldon Valley Lady Warriors on Thursday evening, took their first league win of the season and advanced to 4-0 overall following a three-set victory.

The home team sailed to smooth wins in the opening two sets maintaining their lead throughout, but Weldon Valley fought back in the final set going up by as much as six points. Fleming caught up at 17 points to tie the set and took over from there grabbing a set win of 25-20 and a match win 3-0.

Senior Whitney Chintala held the setter’s position for the majority of the match. She assisted with 18 sets for the Lady Wildcat hitters while adding 10 kills of her own. She led the team’s defensive efforts with 16 digs from the back row and added two aces from behind the serving line.

Junior Kally Kirkwood led the team in several categories. She put 20 kills on the floor for a 6.7 kill per set average. She also led the team in aces with four and matched classmate Maddy Harms at the net in blocks for the team high. Both players blocked six Lady Warrior kill attempts.

Senior Zoey Vandenbark earned a double-double from the back row. She led the group in serve receive with 13 and added 11 defensive digs. Junior Libero Lexi Schaefer followed in serve receives with 11.

League matches continue this week with games at Briggsdale and Peetz on Thursday and Friday. Action on both nights is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. according to schedules on MaxPreps.
