State Champions named All-Conference at season's conclusion

Ten State Champions on this year's Fightin' Bulldog football team earned post-season honors. The Bulldogs brought home Haxtun's eighth State Championship just two weeks ago with a 40-0 shut out over Mancos at the CSU-Pueblo Thunderbowl. Six players earned All-Conference honors and four were named All-Conference, Honorable Mention.

Post-season designations are given at the conclusion of each season and are voted on by coaches from each respective league. Isaac Andersen, Owen Knode, Maclin Tempel, Ashton Ayala, Michael Gerk and Osman Cass all earned All-Conference honors. David Avery, Kyle Fryrear, Kailin Kelley and Grant Statz were named All-Conference, Honorable Mention.

Isaac Andersen, a senior running back and linebacker on this year's team that notched a perfect 13-0 season, ran for 1,420 yards. He averaged 8.8 yards per carry with a long of 58 in a contest against West Grant early in the season. He also tallied 186 yards in the air from 12 receptions. In his final year at Haxtun, Andersen totaled 56 solo tackles and 133 assisted tackles for an average of 10.2 tackles per game. He also notched two sacks and registered four interceptions this season. Throughout his time as a Bulldog, Andersen racked up 119 solo tackles, 281 total tackles, five sacks and seven interceptions. Additionally, he ran for 2,822 yards and tallied 374 yards in the air. At the conclusion of the State Championship on Nov. 26, Andersen was named Most Outstanding Player by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Senior quarterback Owen Knode completed 57 passes for a total of 1,031 yards and 14 touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 117.4. He carried the ball 58 times for 592 yards on the ground and tallied eight rushing touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he racked up 28 solo tackles and 54 total tackles for an average of 4.2 tackle per game. He notched one sack and three fumble recoveries in his final season as a Bulldog. Throughout his high school career, Knode connected 175 passes for a total of 2,620 yards and 34 touchdowns as quarterback. Additionally, he added 763 yards on the ground and another 14 touchdowns. Defensively, he totaled 172 tackles, three sacks and caught four interceptions in his career.

Maclin Tempel, a junior defensive end and guard on this year's team, registered 24 solo tackles and 57 total tackles for 5.2 tackles per game. He notched eight sacks this season while also nabbing one interception. Offensively, he added one touchdown and two, two-point conversions for 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Guard and defensive end Ashton Ayala played in 12 games his senior season. He carried the ball once for a five-yard touchdown to put six points on the board for his team. Additionally, in his four years with the Bulldogs, he registered one pancake block, five solo tackles, 25 total tackles and caused two fumbles.

Running back and linebacker Michael Gerk racked up 1,541 yards his junior season. He carried the ball 140 times for an average of 11 yards per carry. He added 21 touchdowns on the ground this season and three in the air. He caught 19 passes for a total of 248 yards. Gerk also registered 70 total tackles, 31 of those solo for an average of 5.4 tackles per game. He also had two interceptions, one caused fumble and two deflected passes.

Senior defensive end Osman Coss tallied 23 solo and 40 assisted tackles for 63 total tackles this year. He also tied with Tempel for eight sacks for the Bulldogs this season. As a tight end, Coss registered 40 receiving yards including one touchdown. He carried the ball eight times for 66 yards on the ground. Throughout his high school career, Coss registered 27 solo and 61 assisted tackles for a total of 88 for the Bulldogs. He notched nine sacks in his high school football days.

Wide receiver David Avery registered 65 yards in the air for an average of 21.7 yards per catch his senior year. His long of 54 yards resulted in a touchdown catch in a contest with Fleming early in the season. On defense, he registered 22 solo tackles and 30 assisted for a total of 52 this season. In his four years playing football for the Bulldogs, he racked up 424 yards in the air from 26 catches and three touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he totaled 97 tackles including 47 solo and 50 assisted.

Kyle Fryrear, a junior wide receiver and outside linebacker, racked up 468 yards in the air from 17 catches for 27.5 yards per catch this season. He averaged 36 receiving yards per game while scoring 12 touchdowns in the Bulldogs 13 games this year. Fryrear also netted 139 yards on the ground while punching in two rushing touchdowns. Defensively, he added five solo and six assisted tackles for 11 while also registering one sack.

Kailin Kelley, Bulldog sophomore running back and tight end, tallied 112 tackles this season including 34 solo. Kelley averaged 8.6 tackles per game. He also registered three sacks, caused three fumbles and grabbed three fumble recoveries.

Freshman full back and linebacker Grant Statz notched 117 total tackles in his first year as a Fightin' Bulldog. That number includes 38 solo tackles. He averaged nine tackles per game in his freshman year. Statz also registered three sacks, four caused fumble and defected one pass.
