Bulldogs pick up 2 league wins last week

The Haxtun Bulldogs edged out wins over two league opponents last week to boost their Lower Platte record to 3-3. The wins last week gives the team an overall 12-5 record with just one 1A loss on the books. The Bulldogs picked up wins over Akron at home and Merino on the road in Thursday/Friday night action.

Haxtun hosted Akron in a home court Thursday night match up, pulling away with a 65-41 win over the 2A Rams. Despite being in a higher classification, the Rams are a part of the Lower Platte League with the Bulldogs, giving Haxtun a much needed win as the post season edges near.

Senior guard Owen Knode led the team in points against Akron, racking up 25 points Thursday night. Junior Maclin Tempel registered 16 points followed by senior David Avery with 12.

The next night, Haxtun hit the road to meet in Merino with the 1A Rams. The Bulldogs edged out a four-point win over the Merino Rams, notching Haxtun's second win over the team this season. The Bulldogs earned the win, 49-45.

Knode again led his team in the scoring department, this time putting 15 points on the board. Junior Michael Gerk scored 12 points followed by senior Isaac Andersen with 10 and Tempel with nine.

"It's always good to pick up two wins against in conference rivals," said Jayden Stieb, Bulldog Head Coach. "We needed both of them. Especially against Merino, given the RPI and seeding implications for districts. We have a lot of respect for them as a program and we know we will still have to play them at least one or two more times before the season is over. So it was nice to pick up another win over them but we will have to leave that in the past as we look forward."

This week the Bulldogs are slated to face Wiggins and Lone Star, both games at home. Wiggins is set to come to town for a League match up on Thursday evening. Haxtun hosts Lone Star on Friday for parents' night.

Wiggins currently stands 8-8 overall and 4-2 in league play. Lone Star holds a 7-10 overall record. The Longhorns are 3-2 in their YWKC league.

"We have a huge game against Wiggins coming up on Thursday that will also affect our seeding and RPI, so we are solely focused on winning that one," said Stieb.
