CATCHER Ryland Wolff and third baseman Kaiden Schelling catch a Holyoke Dragon runner in a pickle on Thursday afternoon. The Holyoke runner was called out at home plate.

The Bulldogs of Haxtun rounded out the regular season baseball schedule with three wins and one loss in double-header contests with Holyoke and Caliche late last week. Haxtun hosted Holyoke on Thursday, splitting the double-header with the Dragons, and traveled to the home of the Buffs for a two-game sweep over Caliche on Saturday.

The weather cooperated for a sunny, warm afternoon of baseball action as the Bulldogs and Dragons took the field in game one Thursday afternoon. Haxtun went up 2-1 after the first inning of play and held onto the lead throughout the second while adding another three to the board. The two teams kept things even throughout the third as both Haxtun and Holyoke crossed three runs over home plate. Heading into the fourth, Haxtun held an 8-4 advantage over the visiting Dragons.

Holyoke managed a six run inning in the top of the fourth to take the lead over the hometown Bulldogs. The two teams battled down to the wire and into the final outs of the seventh inning but ultimately defense kept the Dragons on top and gave the visiting team a 13-11 win in game one.

Following a short intermission, the two teams took the field again, this time the score swinging the other direction. Haxtun went up 3-0 after an inning of play while dominating at home plate to go onto earn a 14-4 win in game two.

Saturday pitted the Bulldogs in an away contest with the Buffs at Caliche. Haxtun started out on top with five runs in the first inning of contest one. The Bulldogs went on to add seven runs throughout the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to shut the match up down in five with a 12-1 win for the men in red.

The second contest on Saturday went the same way, Haxtun jumping to a 11-4 advantage throughout the first four innings. The Bulldogs added three additional runs in the fifth to seal the deal with a 14-4 victory.

The Haxtun Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 12-6 overall record. The team held an 8-4 record heading into the District Tournament, under way this week. The Bulldogs secured the number two spot in District 4. Merino entered as the top team followed by Otis as three and Caliche as four.

District 4 baseball action started Tuesday evening in Haxtun after rain fall Monday forced a location change in the first round of tournament play. Originally games were scheduled to be played at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling but Haxtun ended up hosting Tuesday's match ups.

Haxtun squared up with Briggsdale in match one of play in the District Tournament Tuesday evening. If the Bulldogs won, they will advance to play on Friday at Fort Morgan High School against the winner of Otis and Fleming. A win in game one on Friday would advance the Bulldogs to the championship round later the same day in Fort Morgan.
