Under the Wire

Left brain … right brain

I suppose it is the old “left brain, right brain” thing. You know what I’m talking about ... The difference between a guy’s thinking and a gal’s thoughts.

Left brain right brain, of course means in any discussion, both husband and wife think they have the “right” brain while the other “left” their brain somewhere else. At our house these discussions usually occur over money. OK, usually over money I spend on what my wife sees as rather foolish things. I can’t believe how narrow-minded she can be.

I scrimped and cut corners by using an old rope to rope calves with, thereby saving the $23 cost of a new rope. I think that is being pretty darn cost-conscious. Sue, on the other hand, got hung up on the fact I used that old rope to spend several hundred dollars at ropings and rodeos each year.

I worked my fanny off a few weeks to put up some high quality hay for our horses, thereby saving the hundreds of dollars per year we used to spend on horse hay. Instead of congratulating me, my wife gets upset when a few thousand dollars of bills start arriving from a few implement dealers (OK, all of them in the county), a tire store or two and the fuel distributor. Add to this, she points out, an entire summer I did nothing in the office, around the house or with my family. Boy, talk about narrow minded!

Now that I have all that extra hay around, it only seemed wise to buy a few more calves to help eat it.

They, of course, might as well be small enough to rope when we get them. They’ll grow big on all that hay, anyway. With all those calves around to rope, my small supply of horses isn’t going to be enough. It looks like I’m just going to have to buy another horse or two to take advantage of all these extra calves we will have around.

Amazingly, as my system starts to unfold, Sue seems to get crankier and crankier. In fact, I’m going to wait a little while before I tell her my horses and calves have eaten all our hay already. I need to buy a couple of loads of hay to get through the winter!

I just don’t understand women!
