Engle earns SCF's first Girls' Championship

ALIYAH ENGLE, a 105-pound senior, pinned Maddie Hoelrle of Ogallala in 4:15. She pinned all three of her opponents at the Garden County Invitational last weekend and was the 105-pound Champion. This was Engle's first championship and being the team's first ever girls' championship.

The Sedgwick County/Fleming boys and girls wrestlers all traveled to Oshkosh, Neb. to participate in the Garden County Invitational. This was their first competition since Dec. 9, 2022 in Southern Valley. The boys were scheduled to go to Wray and the girls to Sutherland, Neb. on Dec. 17, but didn't make the trips due to the weather.

Both teams performed well in their first competitions of the new year. The girls finished in 8th place out of 16 teams and earned their first individual champion with Alyiah Engle winning the 105-pound weight division. The boys finished in 2nd place out of 22 teams and brought home their first team plaque of the season. Individual results from the weekend are as follows:

Girls

100-pound senior Destanie Engle placed third and now has a record of 5-2. She won by a :48 fall over Gianna Gonzales from Scottsbluff, but fell in the semifinal match to Avalina Stoner from Mitchell. In the consolation semifinal, she won by a 4:45 fall over Shelby Hardin from Morrill. Engle won by a 12-6 decision over Hailey Webber of Ogallala in the third-place match.

105-pound senior Aliyah Engle placed first and now holds a record of 4-2. In round one, Engle won by a 4:15 fall over Madie Hoerle of Ogallala. She took the second round match with a 2:45 fall over Angelita Valencia of Gering. In the championship match, Engle won by fall in :52 over Emersyn Cross of Gering Girls.

Boys

113-pound junior Kaiden Schelling placed second and now holds a 9-3 record on the season. Schelling won by fall in :57 over Methius Gonzalez from Scottsbluff. He won the quarterfinal match by a 15-0 tech fall over Paker Wellnitz from Hay Springs. In the semifinal match, Schelling won by a 3:24 fall over Maddox Gardner from Gering JV.

He fell in the championship match to Creel Weber from Hemingford won by a 7-0 decision.

126-pound sophomore Gage Helgoth placed fourth and has a 2-6 record on the season. In the quarterfinal match, Helgoth lost by fall to Oliver Nutter from Sutherland. He won the consolation semifinal with a 1:34 fall over Johnathan Fritzler from Hemingford. In the third-place match, Helgoth lost by fall to Tony Lyon from Perkins County.

145-pound senior Jack Bornhoft placed second and has an overall record of 10-3. In round one, Bornhoft won by a :34 fall over Owen Talton from Bayard. He then won by a :21 fall over Quinten Tretter from Bridgeport in the quarterfinal match. In the semifinal round, Bornhoft won by a 1:36 fall over Gavin Hunt from Garden County. Bornhoft fell in the first place match to Bryan Morales from Scottsbluff by a 10-4 decision.

145-pound junior Trent Wernsman did not place and has a record of 2-4. He lost in the opening round to Kason Bruns from Sutherland by fall. In consolation round two, Wernsman won by a 4:01 fall over Miguel Castillo from Perkins County. Quinten Tretter from Bridgeport won in a 7-5 sudden victory over Wernsman in his final match of the day.

160-pound sophomore Kale Volkman did not place and has a record of 0-4. He lost to Gunner Roberson from Garden County won by fall in round one. In consolation round two Jared Perkins from Bayard defeated Volkman by fall.

182-pound sophomore Ryan Davis did not place and has a record of 3-6. He lost in round one to Kolby Houchin from Bayard by fall. He lost in consolation round two to Owen Plog from Hemingford by a 13-7 decision.

Both the boys and girls are scheduled to compete on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Elm Creek Invitational and Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Imperial Invitational.
