Strokes from Other Pens

Letter to the Editor

April 26, 2023

Letter to the Editor,

Please permit me to make myself perfectly clear. I could care less if one wants to smoke, just don’t throw your cigarette butts out your vehicle window into my yard, the corner street and the neighborhood, especially during a red flag warning! Please. I know not everyone watches the TV news/weather, but the colored map of the eastern plains counties including our community is not a frivolous bulletin to hassle you, but a serious matter deserving respect. This public notice frequently issued during high winds, heat in our dry climate means no spark, butts, BBQ perhaps, mowing a lawn, tossing of ashes (cause of a recent fire in Park County) or any behavior which could start a wildfire. Let me remind you of the March 2017 fire caused by a moron welding a livestock pan near Proctor spread across grassland pasture from Logan to Phillips counties destroying homes, silos, hay and livestock just missing central Haxtun itself. Choices have consequences. You could be charged with arson. Teach your children well. Be a better man and good example to all. Don’t make it a police, fire department problem for yourself, others! Only you can prevent wildfires.

Chris Daley, Haxtun
