Eugene Brown

Eugene Earnest Brown passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023 in Haxtun at the age of 100.

Eugene was born April 30, 1923, in Yetta to Abe and Beulah (Cochran) Brown. He attended and graduated from Fleming High School in 1942. After graduation, he served in WWII in the United States Army Air Corp in the China, Burma, India theatre as a flight surgeon assistant. He obtained the rank of Tech 4 and earned the Asiatic Pacific, Good Conduct and WWII Victory medals for his service. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 2, 1946. Eugene was honored on his 100 birthday by the State of Colorado, Senate and House of Representatives for his service in WWII and by the Cheyenne Veterans Administration.

Eugene married Marjorie Bledsoe on Feb. 14, 1946 in St. Francis, Kan. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Logan County for 30 years and at McAtee Renquist for eight years. Eugene was a charter member of VFW, a member of Fleming Town Council, Fleming United Methodist Church and a Cub Scout Master. He served as Fire Chief (two years) for the Fleming Volunteer Fire Dept. retiring after 22 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, rock/barb wire collecting and traveling in the RV. Eugene will be remembered as a loving husband, father and friend to all.

Eugene is survived by his wife Marjorie Brown; daughter Peggy and husband Edward Brown-Baxter, Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; son Randy Brown, Oshkosh, Neb.; brother Lonnie Brown, Aztec, N.M.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Zelma Ballinger, Lavina Stout, Irma Loux and Lavern Volz; brother Finnis Brown; two grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21 at Fleming United Methodist Church with Reverend Al Straus officiating. Eugene will be laid to rest at Fleming Cemetery.
