Sedg. Co./Fleming wrestlers compete in Nebraska invitationals

120-pound sophomore Annie Wilson works to take Payton Hynson of Yuma down for two points. Wilson defeated Hyson with a pin in :36, finished in first place and was named the Female Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.

On Jan. 12 the Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestlers traveled to Elm Creek, Neb. to compete in the Elm Creek Invitational. The team finished in second place. Individual results from wrestlers competing out of Haxtun Fleming are as follows:

106-pound freshman Colton Schliesser lost to Scotty Anderson of Sutherland by fall and lost to Andy Hernadez of Lexington JV by fall.

120-pound senior Kaiden Schelling took first place in his division. He won by fall over Kale Martinez of Sutherland in 2:23; won by fall over Breckon Johnson of Alma in 0:36; and won by fall over Walter Aguilar of Lexington JV in 1:59. In the championship match, Schelling defeated Alan Araiza of Lexington JV by fall in 1:09.

126-pound sophomore Coleman Firme placed fifth for the day. He lost to Derrek Marquardt of Holdrege by fall; lost to Parker Schutz of Hi-Line by fall; lost to Ian Dunse of Alma by fall; and lost to Oliver Nutter of Sutherland by fall.

Junior Scotty Engle placed first at 132 lbs. He won by fall over Clayt Peterson of Holdrege in 1:28; won by fall over Jake Richter of Sutherland in 1:14; and won by fall over Henry Velasquez of Lexington JV in 0:53. In the championship match, Engle won by fall over Breckyn Collins of North Platte St. Patrick's in 3:05.

132-pound junior Gage Helgoth placed third. He lost to Breckyn Collins of North Platte St. Patrick's by decision, 7-1. He defeated Finn Kerznar of Hi-Line by fall in 1:47; Jake Richter of Sutherland by fall in 1:00; and Aidan Shutts of Hi-Line by tech fall, 15-0. In the third place match, Helgoth won by fall over Henry Velasquez of Lexington JV in 1:15.

157-pound senior Trent Wernsman lost to Chase Bailey of Holdrege by fall. He then defeated Noah Rand of Hi-Lineby sudden victory, 8-6. He lost to Brayan Lozoya of Cozad by fall in his final match of the day.

Junior Grant Statz placed second at 157 pounds. He won by fall over Kaden Melroy of Lexington JV in 0:21 and won by fall over Brayan Lozoya of Cozad in 1:32. In the first place match, Statz lost to Chase Bailey of Holdrege by fall.

Junior Kale Volkman competed at 175 pounds. He lost to Aydan Kaps of Sutherland by fall. He then defeated Lane Citta of North Platte St. Patrick's by fall. He lost the consolation semifinal match to Leonardo Guajardo of Lexington JV by decision, 7-1.

190-pound junior Ryan Davis lost to Gavin Forkner of Holdrege by fall and lost to Rudy Mejia-Castillo of Lexington JV by fall.

The wrestlers traveled to Imperial, Neb., to compete in their second tournament of the week. The team finished in third place out of 20 teams. Individual results for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

At 106 pounds, Schliesser lost to Aaron Robles of Burlington by fall and lost to Landen Spicknall of Wray JV by major decision, 14-2.

Schelling placed first in the 113-pound division. He won by fall over Taylor Eichthaler of Bridgeport in 0:48 and won by decision over Jaymen Lopez of Burlington, 8-3. In the first place match, Schelling won by fall over Cable Larsen of Garden County in 3:45.

In the 126-pound class, Firme lost to Jase Roberson of Garden County by fall and lost to Westen Manley of Chase County by major decision, 9-0.

Engle took second place at 132 pounds. He won by fall over Jacob Smith-Fanning of Dundy County-Stratton in 1:46 and defeated Bronson Poppe of Ogallala by decision, 11-7. In the championship match, Engle lost to Aaron Wilson of Cozad by fall.

In the 132-pound division, Helgoth lost to Nate Barker of Bayard by fall and lost to Kelby Smith of Burlington by decision, 7-0.

Statz placed first on the day in the 157-pound class. He won by fall over Samuel Hare of Hitchcock County in 1:00 and won by fall over Harrison Barnette of Bridgeport in 1:44. In the championship round, Statz won by decision over Trey Stegman of Yuma, 9-3.

Wernsman placed second in the junior varsity 157-pound class. He won by major decision over Laurence Keller of Morrill, 13-5; won by fall over Jess Fanning of Dundy County-Stratton in 1:42. He lost to Brody Garrett of Holyoke by fall.

Volkman wrestled at 175 pounds. He lost to Thomas Reeves of Chase County by fall. He then defeated Cole Leithead of Bridgeport by fall in 3:53. In his final match of the day, he lost to Cameron Johnson of Chase County by fall.

Davis took fourth place at 190 pounds. He won by fall over Juan De La Fuente of Chase County in 0:59 and won by fall over Blake Emig of Dundy County-Stratton in 5:46. He lost to Marcus Ruano of Cozad by decision, 10-7. He took the consolation semifinal match by decision over Karson Hubl of Hitchcock County, 4-3, and lost the third place match to Blake Emig of Dundy County-Stratton by fall.

The SCF lady wrestlers competed at Imperial in the Chase County Invitational on Jan. 13. The team wrestled well finishing their day in second place out of 12 teams. Sophomore Annie Wilson, who competed at 120-pounds, was named the Outstanding Female Wrestler of the tournament as voted on by the coaches. Individual results from ladies competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

175-pound junior Kale Volkman looks for a pin against Bridgeport's Cole Leithead. Volkman pinned Leithead in 3:53 for the win.

Wilson placed first in her division. She won by fall over Peyton Hynson of Yuma in 0:36; won by fall over Faith Lee of Leyton in 1:01; and took the championship match by fall over Jazzmyne Hardin of Morrill in 0:37.

130-pound sophomore Autumn Volkman placed third. She lost to Olivia Barron-Berrelleza of Morrill by decision, 8-3, and Tyra Lewis of Ogallala by fall. Volkman then won by injury default over Gabby Varela of Yuma.

145-pound sophomore Faith Woodside placed fourth. She won by fall over Tristan Hochstine of Ogallala in 5:37. She then lost to Hayley Rusher of Chase County by fall; lost to Oakley Larsen of Garden County by fall; and lost to Lillian Miller of SCF by decision, 8-3.

155-pound sophomore Olivia Stone placed third. She opened with a loss to Brooke Schilke of Chase County by tech fall, 17-2, and then lost to Bailee French of Morrill by fall. Stone defeated Jessica Apodaca of Yuma by fall in 4:40.
