Bulldogs take 4 of 5 last week; advance to 8-4 overall

The Haxtun Bulldogs took a win in four of their last five outings. Over the past week, Haxtun took on Otis, Merino and Sedgwick County, all on the road. As of mid-week, the Bulldogs hold an overall 8-4 record.

The Bulldogs kicked off their road series at Otis last Thursday. The visiting team put two runs on the board in the first, five in the fourth and four in the fifth for an 11-1 win in five innings.

Madden Larsen and Colin Cone led at the plate, both batting 1.000. Cone hit a home run giving him three runs-batted-in, the team high. Larsen tallied two RBIs and Kaiden Schelling registered one. On the mound, Kanin Koberstein took the win. The sophomore pitcher struck out three of nine batters. Schelling also pitched for the Bulldogs; he sat down four of eight batters.

Saturday pitted the Bulldogs on the road to Merino for a double-header with the Rams. Haxtun picked up the early lead, putting one run on the board in the top of the second and another in the top of the third. The home team Rams added two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the contest at two all. Merino added three runs on the board in the third to take their first advantage. The Bulldogs answered back with three runs in the top of the seventh but the home team’s last chance at bat gave the Rams a single run to take the win, 6-5.

Grant Statz batted 1.000 in the first contest with Merino. Koberstein registered a .667 average at the plate. Koberstein also tallied two RBIs.

Both Schelling and Koberstein threw for the Bulldogs. Schelling saw 14 batters, sitting down three. Koberstein sat down one of 16 batters.

The second contest against the Rams went to the Bulldogs as the visiting team put four runs on the board in the second, four in the fifth and one in the seventh. Haxtun earned the 9-6 victory following a seven inning contest.

Schelling led his team at the plate going .667 in game two. Cone and Ryland Wolff each batted .500. Larsen earned a .400 average followed by Statz and Mason Bornhoft, both going .333 at home plate. Cone led in RBIs with two.

Larsen earned the win on the mound. He struck out six of 29 batters.

The Bulldogs hit the road again on Monday, this time north to face off with Sedgwick County. Haxtun took a 17-5 win in game one and an 11-4 victory in game two for a sweep over the Cougars.

According to information on MaxPreps, Merino currently leads the Lower Platte League with a 6-0 record. Akron comes in second at 5-1, Yuma sits third with a 3-1 league record and the Bulldogs hold the fourth seat at 4-3.

This week Haxtun is set to face Wray at home on Friday. Double-header action starts at 2 p.m. Two double-headers remain on the schedule following the Wray match up including those against Akron and Caliche next week.
