Glenda Hovel

Glenda A. (Goddard) Hovel passed away March 15, 2021 in Mesa, Ariz. at the age of 99.

Glenda was born Dec. 23,1921 on a farm two and a half miles east of Haxtun. She was the daughter of Glenn and Alta Goddard. The family moved to a farm five and a half miles south of Haxtun and she attended school at Highland Center and later at Fairfield where she went through the 10th grade. Her junior year was spent in Haxtun and she graduated from Julesburg High School with the class of 1940.

In August 1941 she married Reinder DeBuhr and they worked in defense plants in California. He passed away in June of 1944. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith in San Diego, Calif. in 1942. On April 7, 1946 she married Loren Hovel in Haxtun and three children, Roger, Terry and Pamela, were born to this union.

Glenda was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, holding several offices in the Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and Good Shepherd Auxiliary. Glenda was Secretary-Treasurer of the Aid Association for Lutherans for many years. Also a member of the building committee for the Fellowship Hall of the church. Glenda's confirmation verse: Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1 (RSV)

Glenda was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Glenda was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 20 years, spending one day a week at the Haxtun Hospital and nursing home helping the sick and elderly with whatever needed to be done.

Glenda's last years of life were spent living in Haxtun, Sterling and Mesa.

Glenda is survived by children Terry Hovel and wife Mary Beth, Haxtun, and Pamela Morris and husband Craig, Mesa; grandchildren Jennifer Morgan, Erin Owens, Amber Woods, Jocile Morris, Beth Hovel and Travis Hovel; step-grandchildren Jamison and Jeremy Morris, Dante and Terrell Owens, Julie Small and Shaw Talbot; great-grandchildren Ashlyn and Payton Bailey, Holden and Sawyer Morgan, Lily and Anna Ryles, Gannon and Xander Lierley and J.P. Gaspard.

Glenda is preceded in death by her husband Loren; parents Glenn and Alta Goddard; eldest son Roger; brothers Gaylord Goddard and Merrill Goddard; sisters Charlotte Buettenback and Imogene Orth; as well as many aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.

A private family service was held and a public celebration will be held at a later time.
