July 14, 1937

Relatives and old friends attended the funeral services Monday for Ora Clevenger, 61, who for many years had been a farmer and a rancher in this part of the state. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy at his home in the Proctor community last Wednesday and was ill but a short time. He died July 9.

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary enjoyed their annual picnic Tuesday afternoon at the city park here. Officers elected for the coming year: Mrs. R.V. Exstrom, president; Mrs. W.L. Bamford, vice president; Mrs. Don Gebhard, second vice president; Mrs. J.F. Price, secretary; Mrs. W.C. Moore, treasurer; Mrs. Harry O'Hare, chaplain; Mrs. Paul Burnett, sergeant-at-arms, and Mrs. C.L. Reynolds, historian.

A number of young people of the Brethren church and the pastor, Rev. E.F. Weaver, returned to Haxtun Saturday night from Camp Ewing, near Colorado Springs: Ernest and Mabel Stryker, Helen Crist, Coral Hart, Marcell Harnden, Don Hastings and Bradford Burton.

James B. Josh, well-known resident of the Wages community for a number of years, passed away Wednesday morning.

July 16, 1952

Hospital News - Billy Brundige, small son of Glenn Brundige, was admitted Thursday for observation. Billy fell out of a haymow. He was released the same day.

A gift of money to construct and equip a new building for the Northeast Colorado Health Department is being made by Ira J. Taylor of Paoli. The estimated cost of the building is $150,000. Three sites for the new building have been offered free to the department by the town of Sterling and by Logan County.

Mrs. Charlotte Noreen quietly observed her 89th birthday at her home Tuesday, July 8. A few close friends and relatives called in the afternoon to enjoy a cup of coffee with her.

Miss Joy Monteith visited in Sterling Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Monteith.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the Radford Funeral home for Tommy Lane Haynes, the five-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haynes.

Monroe Bell, who was struck by lightning at his farm south of Fleming Friday is making satisfactory progress toward recovery. It is reported he is still unable to work.

Dr. Kenneth D. Hadeen, a native of Haxtun, has been appointed deputy director of the EDS Center for Experimental Design and Data Analysis in Asheville, N.C.

Advance tickets go on sale this week for the Aug. 1 performance at the Phillips County Fair of country-western singer Jeannie C. Riley.

Jim and Shirley Weimer have just returned from the jungles of Mexico where they underwent training for service with Wycliff Bible Translators. Their future plans are to teach in Papua, New Guinea.

Sharon Atkins was pianist in the UM Church Sunday. Special was a harmonica solo by John Wells.

Mr. and Mrs. George West of Longmont are the parents of a baby boy born July 6, 1977. The little slugger has been named Michael Lee in honor of his grandfathers.

Paoli News - Mitch and Mike Miller entered the Loveland Little Britches Rodeo the past weekend. Mike placed third in the bulldogging. At Castle Rock the weekend before, Mike placed third and Mitch fourth in the bulldogging. This weekend they will be at a rodeo at Estes Park.

July 15, 1992

Six Julesburg gas station owners and operators entered guilty pleas on charges of fixing gasoline prices at the interchanges along Interstate Highway 76 near Julesburg.

Hospital News - Dismissals, Kay Harmon and baby boy Dalton; Gina Morris and baby boy Rhett.

Herman and Helen Enninga of Haxtun were honored on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, with a family dinner hosted by their children and grandchildren. They are the parents of Donald and Jenet Enninga of Fort Morgan and Lloyd and Teri Enninga of Sedgwick.

Mendy Price, daughter of Robert and Linda Price, has been recently awarded a Pell Grant and a Colorado Student Grant to continue her third year of studies in business at Western State College at Gunnison.

Picture: Suzi Harris spends her mornings nowadays giving swimming lessons to little ones at the local pool.

Joyce and Gina Miller attended the eighth Miller reunion in Calhan last weekend in honor of Joyce's mother's 74th birthday. She is the mother of 15 children. She has 68 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren, as well as two great-great-grandchildren.

Phillips County has worked out an agreement to obtain Scormor Lanes Bowling Alley, located just east of the County Courthouse. The Commissioners announced the $65,000 purchase during a recent month-end meeting on June 29.

Seven members of Fleming's Future Business Leaders of America had the opportunity to attend the National Leadership Conference this year in San Antonio, Texas on June 27-July 3. Students Jeffrey Allen, Zac Copeland, Nathan Frantz, Rachel Frantz, Cheyanne Herbert, Saige Herbert and Amber Mekelburg returned with the experience to carry them into another triumphant year along with two national placers.
