Sept. 28, 1938

Accidental discharge of a shotgun in an automobile caused injury Monday evening to Charles Scholl, a farmer living six miles south and one and one-half miles west of Paoli. Mr. Scholl was taken to a hospital at Holyoke, where an operation was performed. It was believed that the injured arm could be saved by physicians.

A public sale to be held Monday is being advertised by John Westerman at the farm eight miles south of Paoli. Included on the list are 19 head of cattle, four head of horses and several hogs. Ray Price is the auctioneer.

Sept. 29, 1953

Sgt. Keith L. Sharpe, who has been stationed at El Toro, Santa Ana, Calif., since his return from Korea, has been transferred to Buckley Field, Denver. Sgt. Sharpe is visiting at the home of his parents this week.

Corn Festival: J.W. Jensen of Fairfield won the grand champion award for corn with his entry of DeKalb hybrid. Ted Wernsman of St. Peters, took the other grand champion ribbon with his display of Wichita wheat. Joe Moon, perennial winner in the corn show, added another blue ribbon to his collection by submitting a winning entry of yellow dent corn.

Sept. 28, 1978

Corn Festival: Royalty for the Haxtun corn festival: Steve Salvador, milo king; Harold McConnell, dryland corn king; Richard Meakins, irrigated corn king; and Marvin Yost, wheat King.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvy Garretson are to be honored at an open house at the Fairfield church on Sunday, Oct. 1, in recognition of their 50th wedding anniversary. They have spent their entire life on two farms just one mile apart.

Players of the week – Football: Jay Haynes, Haxtun; Tim Gribben, Holyoke; Kevin Harrick, Fleming. Volleyball: Laurie Spelts, Haxtun; Linda Willmon, Holyoke; and Darlene Wiebers, Fleming.

Coaches are Sue Kurtzer and Richard Gerk.

Fleming Junior High Lady Wildcats: Becky Brekel, Jeannine Schmidt, Michelle Wernsman, Roxanne Sweet, Spring Honstead, Courtney Lousberg, Michael Morris, Stacey Koehler, Michelle Riemenschneider, Niki Becker and Melanie Wolever. Coach is Leo Mekelburg.

Violet Mae Anderson visited in Julesburg with her sister, Florence Smith. She also called at the home of her brother, Robert Ricker, on her return to Haxtun.

Four Fleming community members are throwing their hats in the ring to win one of two open seats around the Board of Education table. Terms for current members Regina Boerner and Paula Frantz expire in November. The four interested in a spot on the BOE include Scott Muller, Randy Kirkwood, Michelle Asfeld and Dana Chintala.

King Jake Gerk and Queen Amberly Allen were crowned during halftime of the Bulldogs' football game Friday night. Other royalty candidates included Taylor Dishman, Alexis Murillo, Dalton Salyards and Dillon Workman.

Rockland reunion: Several gathered on Aug. 17 at the Haxtun Community Center for a Rockland school reunion. Those who attended the cowboy themed gathering in honor of Leon Fetzer were Clayton Fetzer, Dorothy Fetzer, Nona Aydelott, Ida Mae Wisdom, Christina Freemyer, Bill Kain, Marlys Kain, Kathy Peterson, Stan Aydelott, Ronald Aydelott, Dean Schachterle, Pauline Grabowski, Jack and Betty Dix, Robert Fetzer, Gary Grabowski, Vanita and Wayne Hinde and Sam Fetzer.
