Aug. 4, 1937

Claude D. Walrod, well known Holyoke attorney for the past 27 years, passed away at his home at 11 o'clock Saturday night following an illness of several months. He was 62 years of age.

A reunion with a brother whom she hadn't seen for 56 years was the pleasant experience of Mrs. Mary Goddard of Haxtun last Sunday. Mrs. Goddard's brother, George Helm of Stockton, Mo., and his wife and their son and daughter, stopped in Haxtun for a visit on their way home from California.

Aug. 6, 1952

Hospital News - Mrs. Robert Anderson and infant daughter Caroline Marie were dismissed Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Shott of Merino are the parents of an eight-pound girl born Monday. Mrs. Shott is the daughter of Cecyl Haney, superintendent of the Haxtun Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Rice-Warren Mortuary in Fort Collins for Robert Gene Meakins, eight-year-old son of Lt. and Mrs. William E. Meakins Jr. of Fort Collins, who passed away the preceding Sunday (July 26, 1952) at the Larimer County Hospital. His father, who had been on active duty with the Air Force in Korea, returned to the United States in February because of the illness of his son.

The Red Arrow Station, operated by Miss Lois Kumpitch, and the Texaco Bulk plant, operated by Glenn J. Jones were broken into and robbed some time during Friday night. The take at both places was small. Miss Kumpitch estimated her loss at about $10 in small change and a few cartons of cigarettes. At the Texaco station, about five or six dollars in pennies were taken. Sheriff Clements of Holyoke is investigating the robberies and has several leads on the case.

July 28, 1977

County unemployment doubled in one-year period, according to the Department of Labor and Employment. The period ending in April of this year showed employment county-wide was 2.9 percent compared to 1.4 percent recorded in 1976. Primary factors producing the a degree of uncertainty in the future development of the Colorado economy: The overall impact of the state's drought situation, severe energy shortages and a lack of oil and natural gas.

Tom Edwards of Haxtun was appointed assistant football and assistant basketball coach at Haxtun High School for the 1977-78 school year, according to Elden Reutter, school Superintendent. He will work under Glen Woodward, who was hired last moth as head football and basketball coach. A graduate of Colorado State University, Edwards, 24, is a farmer in the Haxtun area.

Aug. 5, 1992

Ernie and Mabel Stryker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 3, 1992. They were married June 3, 1942 in the White Cottage, Ohio, Church of the Brethren. The Strykers have farmed north of Haxtun all their married lives.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Schropfer celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Aug. 1, 1992, with a surprise dinner in Sterling at the Park Inn hosted by their children and grandchildren.

The Haxtun Locker Plant grabbed first place in the Haxtun Co-Rec Softball tournament held last week. Members of the team include Jim Rifenbark, Denise Robeson, Colleen Lockwood, Denise Hill, Janet Walker, Marie Schmalhorst, Rick Lockwood, Roger Fetzer, John Schoutta, Bryan Kroeger, Doug Ruch, Tom Walker, Margo Kroeger, Janet Hill and John Hill.

The Lady Bulldogs first volleyball game is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30. The first Bulldog football game is set for Friday, Aug. 31.

Results from the Town of Fleming's 2011 audit conducted by Lauer, Szabo and Associates are in - and it isn't pretty. Scott Szabo reported an $86,618 deficit during a special meeting solely to review the audit on Monday, July 23.
