Jan. 25, 1939

One of the largest crowds to attend a funeral at Haxtun paid last respects Tuesday to Ray Price, local auctioneer, and resident of the community for over 20 years. A cold Mr. Price had contracted developed into pneumonia, which baffled all efforts to save his life. He was 55 years, seven months and 23 days old.

Miss Maude Evans of Holyoke was fatally injured Monday night in a Denver hotel when a bullet that was accidentally discharged from a revolver crashed through the floor and struck her in the back of the head while she lay asleep. The shot was fired by a state courtesy patrolman, who was demonstrating a new gun to a patrolman and friend. Thinking that no harm had been done, the patrolmen did not investigate further. Although the accident occurred about nine o'clock, the death was not discovered until Tuesday morning, when a hotel maid went to Miss Evans' room. Miss Evans' parents are Mr. and Mrs. Rex C. Evans. She was 22 and an only child.

Jan. 27, 1954

Jack G. Price, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Price Sr., has reported aboard the attack aircraft carrier, USS Hancock, a unit of the Atlantic fleet.

Fleming News - The school has purchased a much-needed washing machine for the lunchroom, two needed trays for glasses and six dozen forks.

Rockland News - Mr. and Mrs. Revis Melvin and girls were Friday evening visitors at the Adolph Fix home.

Jan. 25, 1979

Fourteen trains a week are now rumbling through Haxtun on the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks according to a railroad spokesman. Four loaded coal trains travel eastward and four returned. Three local trains go each way each week.

Fleming News - Darlene David spent the weekend in Fleming with her folks. She was joined for dinner Sunday in the Mitchell Davis home by Mr. and Mrs. Byron Gillham and Nathan, and Rev. Bill Moore. The men enjoyed the ball game on TV in the afternoon.

The members of the Matinee Study Club enjoyed their meeting in the home of Mrs. Leon Beck. Officers for next year: Mrs. Dallas Hopkins, president; Mrs. Leslie Smith, vice president; Mrs. Lloyd Rowan, secretary; Mrs. Leon Beck, treasurer; Mrs. Henry, Hulse, historian; Mrs. Mitchell Davis, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. Delmar, Kennedy, sunshine chairman.

Jan. 26, 1994

Austin Greg Lundgren hurried into the world on Jan. 22 to be the first baby born at Haxtun Hospital for 1999. He wasn't due until Jan. 27, so his entrance as the first baby surprised parents Lou Anne and Greg Lundgren. Corina Wilson, president of Haxtun's Beta Sigma Phi chapter, is pictured with the baby and parents as she presents a basketful of gifts from local businesses. Austin has a sister, Brittany, 2 1/2.

Class of 1967, setting up scholarship fund for Lois Pack: Lois's sister Barbara and her husband George McCulloch of Northglenn, have pledge their support with a yearly $500 match of funds.

A burned-out shell is all that remains of the building that housed Leon Atkins Motors. Although the fire was under control in about three and a half hours, Haxtun Fire Chief, Bob Sauder says water was actually pumped for five hours. One truck stayed until 7 p.m. to put out smoldering debris. He estimated that 250,000 to 300,000 gallons of water were used, pumping 4,000 gallons per minute.

Jan. 29, 2014

A motion to extend Superintendent Jim Copeland's contract for the 2015-16 school year didn't pass unanimously during a Fleming School Board meeting last week. The decision to keep Copeland throughout the next two school years came at a narrow 3-2 vote.

The Rams of Akron proved too much for the Bulldogs Friday night. The 85-62 loss drops the home team to 8-2 heading into a busy week of basketball action.
