The Haxtun Harvest

A number of farewell parties and social gatherings have been held in Haxtun during the past week honoring the Rev. I. C. Snavely, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, and his family, who are leaving for the east.

They body of Lewein, 6, who lost his life Sunday evening, May 26, in the flood waters south of Haxtun, was recovering last Sunday morning, a week later, six miles west of the highway crossing. Mr. Lewein narrowly escaped the tragedy that overtook his wife and two children. His first wife, the sister of the late Mrs. Lewein, passed away a short time after their marriage.

Fairfield News - the Junior League rendered its regular quarterly program in the church auditorium last Sunday evening. The program consisted of a piano duet by Eleanor and Irene Ahnstedt, a cornet solo by Douglas Trego and two-minute talks by Mildred Skold, Phyllis Anderson, Dorothy Franson, Margaret Mattson, Verne Cronquist, Harold Ruch, Paul Ruch and Harry Franson.

Midway News - about 43 relatives and friends of Fred Farner gathered at his home Sunday, May 26, and reminded him of his birthday anniversary, which was May 25. A bounteous dinner was served at noon and ice cream and cake was enjoyed in the afternoon.

An estimated 300 Burlington Northern workers have arrived in Phillips County to do repair and upkeep work on the BN railroad live which runs east and west through Haxtun. About half of the crew will be staying in Haxtun while the other half will live in Holyoke while the repair work is going on. BN has brought in special railroad cars with living quarters built in where most of the crew members will live.

Three Haxtun boys are spending this week attending the American Legion annual Boys State, being conducted at Colorado State University at Fort Collins. John Hart, Chet Nelson and Jim Orth, who will be seniors in the fall, are attending the five-day event which began yesterday.

Two Haxtun High School girls will be part of a group which will represent Highline Electric Association at the Colorado Rural Electric Energy Seminar scheduled for next month in Steamboat Springs. Cheryl Meakins and Shelly Stansbury, both of Haxtun, scored high in the special energy quiz given in the 1980 Youth Tour Contest. Stansbury is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stansbury of Haxtun. She will be a senior in the fall. Meakins is will be a junior in the fall is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Meakins.

Friday, June 6, there was a bridal shower held in honor of Arlene Wiebers, bride-elect of Tim Carper at the Community Center in Haxtun. Hostesses for the shower were June Stauffer and Lilly Salyards.

Haxtun's fifth graders took their annual trip to Denver to view the Shrine Circus. The group left by bus Friday morning at about 8 a.m. Veylerd Baker and Ruth Baker were the local Shriners who accompanied the group as did elementary school instructors Connie Haynes, Garry Haynes and Gladys Bjorklun.

Fleming News - a bridal shower was held at the home of Dorothy Lou Williams in honor of Cindy Pyle, bride-elect of Bob Vandenbark.

The Phillips County Sheriff's Office became involved in a search for two escaped inmates and an alleged kidnap victim when the trio reportedly made a stop in Haxtun. The Colorado Department of Corrections reported the escape of two inmates from their Greeley corrections facility on June 3. The fugitives reportedly fled to a Haxtun residence after allegedly kidnapping a female victim and commandeering her vehicle.

14-year-old Grady Groshans, Paoli, will ride for the first time in this year's National Pony Express Association re-ride, which started in Sacramento, Calif., on June 13, and will come through Nebraska on June 20.

A dinner was served Saturday, June 10, to members and guests prior to the annual installation of officers at the Fleming Veterans of Foreign Wars club. Following the dinner, which was attended by 43 people, Gerald Williamson passed the gave to Larry Wisdom, the new commander of Richard Becker Post 7153.

Nathan Peterson, Fleming, who earned his applied science degree in nursing in December of 1999, is currently employee of at the Sterling Regional MedCenter. Peterson, a registered nurse, is the son of Evelyn Peterson, formerly of Haxtun. He is a 1989 graduate of Haxtun High School.

Four Phillips County Art enthusiasts traveled around the State of Colorado recently, visiting five art centers and gathering information that will be helpful in planning the renovation and programming for the Prairie Winds Art Center. Those enthusiasts are Teresa Mailander, Nancy Dee, Dorothy Ortner and Bonnie Patterson.

Championship flight winners Ken Pierce, Kyle Pierce and Mike Haynes of the M & M Management golf tournament at the F&H Golf Course on Saturday, May 29. Proceeds from the annual tournament benefit Hospice of the Plains. This year, $1,900 was raised for Hospice.

Ashley Salvador, a 2006 graduate of Haxtun High School, graduated magna cum laude from Johnson and Wales University, Denver, on May 22, 2010. She earned a bachelor's of science degree as a marketing major with concentration in advertising communication.
