Burr qualifies for State following runner-up Regional finish on Friday

The Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestling team traveled to Akron on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 for the 2021 2A Regional Tournament. The 106–145-pound wrestlers competed on Friday and the 152–285-pound wrestlers competed on Saturday. The team finished the weekend in fourth place with 114 points behind Wray with 220 points and Highland and Yuma each with 115 points. SCF has three state qualifiers, 113-pound senior Marco Martinez, 152-pound junior Hayden Burr and 195-pound senior Fabian Lopez. In a normal season where four wrestlers from each weight class qualified for State instead of just two, seven wrestlers would have qualified.

Regional match results for wrestlers competing out of Fleming and Haxtun are as follows:

106-pound freshman Kaiden Schelling placed third. He defeated Edward Ellingen of Wiggins in the quarterfinals with a fall in :20 before losing to Beau Clouse of Merino in the semifinals, 9-4, dropping him to the consolation side of the bracket. In the consolation semifinals Schelling defeated Daken Torrence of Wray with a fall in 4:12 which put him in the third place match. His opponent in this match was Aden Reents of Burlington. Schelling defeated Reents, 6-1. He was then able to challenge the second-place finisher for true second and a chance to go to State. The challenge match was against Highlands Elias Garcia. Schelling lost this match in overtime and finished his debut season with a 14-4 record.

120-pound sophomore Jack Bornhoft finished his season at 11-7. In the quarterfinals on Friday, Bornhoft defeated Caleb Kays of Wiggins with a fall in 1:36. He then lost in the Semifinals to Yuma's John Brown by fall. Bornhoft defeated Nathan Martinez of Highland in the consolation semifinals with a fall in 1:33. He was then defeated by Matakeasii Rodriguez of Burlington, 16-8, and finished in fourth place.

132-pound freshman Keegan Colglaizer finished his season with a 12-6 record. Colglazier was defeated in the quarterfinals by Laden Sampson of Akron by fall. He was then defeated by Alex Hishinuma of Wiggins by fall to end his season.

Junior Joel Muller competed at 138 pounds and finished his season with a 12-9 record. Muller was defeated by Yuma's Blaze Brophy in the quarterfinals by fall. He then defeated Tyler Ziegler of Burlington with a fall in :47 in the consolation round one. Muller then lost to Koy Smith of Wray by fall in the consolation semifinals to end his season.

At 18-3 on the season, junior Hayden Burr placed second at 152 pounds and will be making the trip to the State Tournament. Burr defeated Tyler Allen of Yuma with a fall in 2:53 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match, Burr defeated Kolton Brown of Platte Canyon with a fall in 3:07 allowing him to advance to the championship match against Wray's Tyler Collins. Burr lost to Collins, 17-3. He was then challenged for true second by Gabe Schubarth of Limon. Burr won this match which secured his trip to the State Tournament.

The State Tournament is set to be held at Southwest Motors Events Center in Pueblo. 2A is scheduled to take the mats on Friday, March 12. The State Tournament will not be open to the general public. Spectators will be limited. The one-day tournament is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals. The semifinals, consolation round one and consolation semifinals are set to take place at 12:30 p.m. The 2A Parade of Champions is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the finals, third/fourth and fifth/sixth place matches are set to start at 5:15 p.m. The event will be live-streamed.
