Miss Evangeline Mooney of Haxtun was one of 18 girls who were recently pledged to sororities at the Colorado State College of Education at Greeley. She became affiliated with the Sigma Upsilon Sorority during the spring pledge week. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W.E. Mooney and graduated from Haxtun High School in 1933.

Philorado News - Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Starkebaum and family were Sunday dinner guests at the Edwin Wagner home.

Wages News - Funeral services were held for Griffin Crossland Thursday afternoon. The bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community.

April 25, 1951

Twenty Phillips County young men went to Denver Tuesday to be given pre-induction examinations the next day. Four men will be inducted into the army from the county this coming week. Two men will be inducted from the county on May 4.

Mesdames Oliver Anderson, G.A. Starkebaum, Robert Grauberger of Fleming, Gilbert Schuman of Sterling, and Gust Anderson were guests at the H.H. Sonnenberg home Saturday afternoon to meet Mrs. Kenneth Anderson and son of Galesburg, Ill., who are visiting with her parents.

Clarkville News - Mr. and Mrs. Junior Goodman, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brazelton and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Myers were entertained at a canasta party at the Clinton Jeffers' home Friday evening.

Miss Betty Meakins was honored at a pre-nuptial shower Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Hoyt Burdick. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. George McCulloch and Mrs. Ernest Livingston. Guests were Mrs. S.J. Meakins, Mrs. Ottis Dinsmore, Mrs. Rex Meakins, Mrs. Leonard Sharpe, Mrs. Bessie Farner, Mrs. Donald Luelf, Mrs. H.R. Fleming News - Guest for Easter dinner in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Heath and Raenell were Mrs. Bob Bruns of Engelwood; Mrs. Fern Scheel of Waunita, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hulse and Donald; Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Scheel and Jill and Eric of Aurora; Scot Heath of Fort Collins; Naomi Kennedy, Mrs. Ellen Kennedy, Richard Olson, Garnet Curtis, and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Rundall of Ovid. Afternoon visitors were Mrs. Lucille Kennedy and Tom, Linnea and Patti.

The Robesons, Randy, Denise, and nine-month-old Seth, are settling into their new home in Haxtun. Randy has been hired by Haxtun Coop Association to assume the position as general manager when Bob Fetzer retires on May 31 of this year. Fetzer will have over 30 years with the company.

With hopes that a few changes will encourage more business, The Dog House restaurant re-opened for business last Thursday. The fast-food restaurant, which opened the weekend of Corn Festival in 1989, has been closed since Dec. 31 of last year. Mary Beth and Terry Hovel own the business.

Girls' junior high track members at Haxtun: Theresa Southern, Erin Hovel, Shannon Salvador, Megan Rush, Misha Mooney, Kristin Howard, Jackie Dix, Casey Sumpter, Marcie Ham, Yolanda Kinzie, Jessica Harms, Lindsey Firme, Somer Ruch, Kelly Ensminger, and Mindy Macklin. Sarah Atkins serves as manager. Coaches are Brent Jeffers and Kay Davis.

Fleming Cat Tales: Sara Felzien recently received first place and second place overall in the 24th annual High Plains Secondary Schools Art Exhibit. Molly Felzien placed third overall. Receiving pins for their work were Frank Lousberg and Mary Muich. Jerry Hershfeldt, Michelle Rigel, Duane Dobbins and Terry Vigil received honorable mentions.

Ground broke and the construction process began on the Haxtun Community Childcare Center las Wednesday. Community members gathered at the future site of the HCCC on West Powell to show support for the Haxtun Childcare Coalition who made the dream of building a childcare center in Haxtun a reality.

It's been just over a month since Ben Cox was seriously injured in a skiing accident and although the recovery road remains steep, Ben is in great spirits. His family's pastor, Frank Tamasy, said on Monday that Ben is expected to come home sometime in June.

After 17 days at the The Children's Hospital and two surgeries to fix broken bones, Cameron Henry came home on Thursday, April 14. The 13-year-old Fleming student was seriously injured in an accident on March 29 along Highway 6 between Fleming and Sterling.

Phillips County Economic Development award winners George Michael, Briar Bergner, Kevin Scott, Tammi Timm, Alex Quintana, Tracey Trumper and Alan Nall worked to together to obtain recycling center containers for both Haxtun and Holyoke.
