STATE QUALIFIER Jerry Switzer, finishing first in his heat of the 100-meter dash, took third overall with a time of 11.78. Switzer also qualified in the 200-meter dash and the mile relay team.

Eighth grade commencement exercises for elementary schools in the west end of Phillips County will be held Thursday evening at the Church of the Brethren in Haxtun with 50 students. Students from Haxtun include Stuart Exstrom, Fred Meyers, Delbert Anderson, Pete Lubchenco, Leslie Chryst, Margie Nell, Maxine Collins, Robert Reynolds, DeVerne Brooks, Eileen Gipple, Helen Hunt, Betty Groover, Alice Davis, Marjorie Elliot, Earl Critchlow, Catherine Pond, Katherine Wisdom, Muriel Monk, Harlan Spanjer, Della Belle Riley, Dale Haskins and Doris Peterson.

Bryant News - The school election was held at West Bryant School on Monday evening. Arthur Lewman was elected treasurer and Dick Salvador secretary.

Haxtun High School Happenings: The freshmen are winding up their first year at Haxtun High School by going to the river for a frolic. The sophomores bring their year to a close by celebrating at Sterling Saturday. The juniors will do a Highland Fling at Julesburg's skating rink. And the seniors - poor things - will graduate Friday night.

Mark Meakins, a senior at Haxtun High School, is a recipient of the Jostens Foundation Leader Scholarship award. He is the son of Richard and Pat Meakins, Haxtun. Anita Fetzer has been awarded the Department President's Scholarship for junior members from the American Legion Auxiliary. She is the daughter of Dave and Joyce Fetzer, Haxtun.

High winds, hail, heavy rains and even tornado action were part of a storm which hit the Holyoke area Thursday, May 2. Tornado damage was also reported in the town of Grant, Neb.

Haxtun Hospital District is proud to announce that Dr. Joseph Spurlock will begin his medical practice in Haxtun starting in August 2011.

For the Fleming Wildcats, this season's road to the Regional Tournament has been paved by 19 wins and three losses. The Wildcats sealed their fate last week during the District Tournament at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling where they added two wins and one loss to their record.

Finally, after several years of review, public comment and discusion, the Haxtun Town Council passed a new ordinance regarding nuisances. The ordinance pased unanimously during a meeting on May 2.
