The Haxtun Harvest

The most destructive fire in several years occurred at Haxtun early Tuesday morning, completely destroying the Motor Haven Garage and Farmers' Cooperative Oil Company station and threatening the entire north section of town. The total loss was estimated at $35,000.

News was received this week of the marriage of Miss Virginia Ghent to Frank Montgomery Jr. The wedding took place Tuesday morning, April 2, at the Methodist parsonage at Golden. Nuptial vows were read at 10 o'clock by the Rev. O. C. Hall.

Cline Z. Barkey of Haxtun is to be graduated with the winter term class at the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, on April 18. The 39 members of the class represent 13 states and five foreign lands.

Frank Mahaffey, 27, of Fleming, died at a hospital at Grand Island, Neb., last Saturday evening from injuries received in an accident early Friday morning. There is no absolute knowledge as to how the fatal injuries were incurred although it is thought likely that Mr. Mahaffey had crawled into his truck rack, possibly to investigate an animal that was down, and was trampled by cattle. Examination at the hospital showed his chest to be crushed. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Grand of Fleming on Dec. 19, 1930.

Haxtun art students received special recognition for art projects they entered at the Sterling Art Show. They are Carrie Holsten, Lennie Fisbeck, Shelly Stansbury and Tony Wernsman. The art projects are still on exhibit in Sterling.

The Haxtun Jaycee-ettes are sponsoring a community playhouse on April 25 in the high school new gym. They will present a one-act play, "The Little Red School House." The play is about an extraordinary one-room schoolhouse. The main character is the teacher, Mary Bronson, played by Millie Lightsey. There is a bully, Butch Callahan, played by Don Lock; a sissy Mayberry Flutter, played by Brian Biesemeier; head of the school board's daughter, Clarissa Porter, played by Sue Anish. This story is a very funny play.

Clarkville and Wages News - Eva Merrill and her family of Sterling and came Sunday afternoon to visit Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Salvador. Louie and Kibby Brazelton and Shawn Brown brought the snowmobile over and they all spent the afternoon and evening sledding and snowmobiling.

LaRay Crossland attended the wedding reception of Robert and Connie Holcomb at the Lloyd Holcomb home on Saturday.

Paoli News - Larry Fisbeck, Annie Hutchinson, Suzanne Bastin and Kevin Combs college friends of Larry of Ft. Collins came on Friday to spend the weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Fisbeck and Lennie. They all attended the track meet in Brush on Saturday.

Fleming News - The Fleming Senior Citizens held their potluck lunch Friday in the VFW. Mrs. J. S. Plank had charge of the business meeting, the blood pressure clinic for April was announced. Mrs. Nolte presented pins that had been made by the late Dames Cornelius.

The 25th annual Colorado Stare Science Fair was held April 10, 11 and 12 at Cinderella City in Englewood. Four of the seven Fleming students who participated in this year's fair were recognized with awards; Darla Langdon, Tim Grauberger, Kirk Schepler and Becky Dreier.

Rockland News - Ethel Chamblin was hostess to the Sunshine Circle Thursday afternoon. It was nice to have Minnie Gibbs among those present.

Crissa and Michael McClain visited their great-uncle and aunt, Leonard and Helen Fix Wednesday.

Haxtun School officials and representatives from law enforcement attempted to give the message reality during a two-day program held at Haxtun High School on Monday and Tuesday, April 10 and 11. Part of the program was a mock accident in which two students die and a third charged with vehicular homicide. The town siren sounded and emergency personnel as well as law enforcement responded to give the scene a sense of reality. The program culminated with an assembly on Tuesday.

Fleming Mayor Pro-Tem, Esther Schaefer, middle, officially opened Fleming's Wildcat Baeball Field on April 6. She was assisted by Fleming Town Administrator, Sue Einspahr.

On April 7, Ruth Wilson retired from her position in accounting at Haxtun Super's. She has worked at the grocery chain's Haxtun store for 23 years as clerk and manager. Wilson was hired in late 1976 by former owners, Walden and Evelyn Peterson, when the store was still in the old location of 120 South Logan, Haxtun.

Jackie Dix, a 1995 graduate of Haxtun High School, received word recently that she has been named to the 1999/2000 dean's list at Midwestern University, Glendale, Ariz.

Members of the Haxtun Community Auxiliary held a tea on Thursday, April 6 at the Haxtun Inn. The occasion served to welcome the new owners of the business to the Haxtun business community. Those attending were: Alice Bamford, Ethel Gourley, Carol Scheel, Rhoda Renzelman, Lydia Dunbar, Carol Allen, Kay Hinde, Helene Yost, Carole Borra, Cleo Fryrear, Dorothy McConnell, Pearl Hinde and Shirley Salyards.

Fleming Mayor Bob Stone presented outgoing council members Debbie Herring and Tom Gardiner with plaques in recognition for their years of service to the Town of Fleming on Monday, April 19. Gardiner served Fleming for 12 years, four as Mayor and eight as a council member. Herring served on the Fleming Town Council for eight years.

Harrison Johnson, Fleming senior, signed a letter of intent on Thursday, April 15, to wrestle for the Morningside Mustangs. Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, offered Johnson a four-year scholarship where he is thinking of majoring in psychology.
