The Haxtun Harvest

South Rockland News - John Schachterle and family and Roy Schachterle were dinner guests at the Jacob Fetzer home Sunday.

Pumpkin Vine News - Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Yost were callers at the W. A. Groves home Friday.

Rockland News - A number of young folks visited at the Jake Fetzer home Sunday afternoon. Those present were Cecil Pohlman, Roy and Raymond Schachterle, Reon and Dale Rauscher, Harold and Doris Becker, Clara Martha, Dorothy and Edwin Becker.

Dailey News - O.K. Clark has completed the remodeling of his garage, making a fine auto display room with office and storeroom for supplies and accessories.

Sept. 16, 1935

The Haxtun Harvest

North County Line News - Mr. and Mrs. George Michael and Leonard left with Mrs. Dorothy Michael to meet with relatives from Colorado Springs. Grandma Michael will spend the winter with her daughter at Colorado Springs.

New Haven News - Mrs. O.D. Moon was hostess to the WCTU on Friday afternoon. The program consisted of the following: legislation, Mrs. Anna Ketchum; child welfare, Mrs. Crete Dever; flower mission, Mrs. J.A. Chapman; and publicity Mrs. Nettie Kuhler. The old offices were reelected for the coming year.

Last Friday 15 young people from Haxtun decided to become real hoboes, seeking fame and fortune by traveling about he country atop a boxcar. Although it was great fun, the young tramps remembered the comfort of home by the time they had reached Sterling, and the adventure ended there. They returned early the next morning after a glorious trip.

Mrs. M. J. Mulvihill, 67, passed away suddenly at her home northeast of Haxtun, Wednesday evening. The family moved to Haxtun in 1909 where they purchased a farm northeast of town. She had been a mother to her tow granddaughters, Edna Mae and Phyllis Ann, since the death of their mother last winter.

Sept. 18, 1980

It was banana split time at the Berean Church last week as more than 50 children attending the AWANA meeting took on this banana split. It took the children only a matter of minutes to finish off the split. The Rev. John Regier was in charge of the split-building.

The Thursday Study Club met at the home of Mrs. Freda Morison on Thursday, September 11, to celebrate the 50th year anniversary of the club. Floy Schamberger welcomed the members and guest.

Miss Corina Widgery, bride-elect of Tom Wilson, was honored with a bridal shower Saturday evening in the home of Mrs. Rex Hadeen with Miss Jane Wheeler assisting.

Playing a strong opening game of the season Haxtun's Bullpup junior high football team got past Imperial, 130, Thursday in action in Imperial.

Fleming News - Wesley Plank of Sterling was a house guest of his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Bill Plank Sr. Friday night. On Saturday, they went to Holyoke where they attended the wedding of Wesley's aunt Miss Debra Sue Grantham and Robert Hilton. Wesley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Plank, were both members of the wedding party.

The church bulletin carried many important announcements of things to come. They included the 90th anniversary for the church on Sept. 28.

Fairfield News - The ladies attending the Fairfield Friends Club at the home of Mrs. Valva Eckman on Thursday were: Mesdames Blanche Garretson, Dorothy Ruch, Signe Hanson, Leona Knode, Hilda Ferguson, Iva Sandquist, Vicki Hadeen, Maude Shannep, Violet Mae Anderson, Emily Skold, and Gladys Bjorklun. Clara Bjorklun was a guest.

The Haxtun-Fleming Herald

Fleming's elementary school students paid tribute to the opening of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, Australia, by staging their own opening ceremony on Friday, Sept. 15. FES's kindergarten through sixth graders ran their own Olympic torch through the streets of Fleming, simulated the parade of the athletes into the Olympic arena, and ended by forming the five-ring Olympic symbol on the football field.

Fleming Wildcats recovered from their 46-20 loss to Julesburg last week, to take out the Caliche Buffalos, 40-12, in football action this past Friday, Sept. 15. The win puts the Cats at 2-1 overall for the season, and 1-1 in conference play.

Haxtun's Lady Bulldogs collected one win and one loss in volleyball action this past week. Carly Firme set nine of nine for 100 percent and Marcie Olson set six of eight for 75 percent.

On Sept. 14, Helen Stanley and Sue Stanley spoke to the Haxtun FFA Chapter, Helen told about her love of FFA and when she was in high school girls were not allowed to be part of FFA. Her ag teacher, Irv Cross gave her the opportunity to participate as a secretary. Helen's reason for visiting was to present and donate a beautiful handmade quilt to the Haxtun FFA Chapter. Haxtun's FFA Chapter will be auctioning off this quilt as the annual FFA Member Action at Corn Festival.
